The Town of Pocahontas utilizes a Mayor / Council form of government.

The Town of Pocahontas also operates a water treatment plant and distribution system for the town and surrounding communities in both Virginia and West Virginia.

William Brown Library and Museum opened in 1860, named after a Liverpool merchant whose generosity enabled the Town Council to act upon an 1852 Act of Parliament which allowed the establishment of a public library, museum and art gallery, and in 1871 the council organised the first Liverpool Autumn Exhibition, held at the new library and museum.

In the fashionable Second Empire style Reed also designed Melbourne Town Hall ( 1870 ); the World Heritage-listed Royal Exhibition Building, completed for the 1880 International Exposition in Melbourne ; and the now demolished Menzies Hotel ( 1867 ).

It was announced in 2009 that the Big Town Bowl Lanes would close, leaving the Exhibition Hall the last operating structure on the property.

The Cities and Town Planning Exhibition opened in the senate of the Madras University on January 17, 1915 and was inaugurated by the Governor who also gave an introductory speech.
