In the UK cassette culture was at its peak in what is known as the post-punk period, 1978-1984.

UK cassette culture was championed by marginal musicians and performers such as Barry Lamb, Storm Bugs, the insane picnic, Instant Automatons, Stripey Zebras, What is Oil ?, The APF Brigade, Blyth Power, The Peace & Freedom Band, Academy 23, Sean Terrington Wright, Frenzid Melon, Cleaners From Venus, Chumbawamba, 5ive Ximes 0f Dust and many of the purveyors of Industrial music, e. g. Throbbing Gristle, Cabaret Voltaire, and Clock DVA.

Both the New Musical Express ( NME ) and Sounds, the main weekly music papers of the time in the UK, launched their own ' cassette culture ' features, in which new releases would be briefly reviewed and ordering information given.

The October 2011 edition of Record Collector magazine published an article about the significance of cassette culture in the UK and listing 21 rare but sought after cassette releases.

In the United Kingdom the C86 cassette, a 1986 NME compilation featuring Primal Scream, The Pastels, The Wedding Present and other bands, was a document of the UK indie scene at the start of 1986.

Kellett left to join Simply Red, but guested on The Guitar and Other Machines ( 1987 ), the first new UK album to be released on the unsuccessful Digital Audio Tape format ( as well as the usual media of LP, audio cassette and CD ).

Subjectively valid methods came to prominence in consumer audio in the UK and Europe in the 1970s, when the introduction of compact cassette tape, dbx and Dolby noise reduction techniques revealed the unsatisfactory nature of many basic engineering measurements.

The first NOW was released on 28 November 1983 and featured thirty UK hit singles from that year on a double vinyl LP or cassette.

Wild Palms was released on VHS cassette in the UK in 1993, where it aired between 15 November and 7 December the same year.

The album gained a following in the United Kingdom, charting at 59 on the UK Albums Chart, as well as its lead single, " Teenage Whore " entering the country's Indie chart at number one.

After it proved popular in the clubs, this Coldcut " Seven Minutes of Madness " remix ended up being promoted as the single in the UK.

The single " People Hold On " became another UK Top 20 hit.

Coldcut and Mark Saunders produced her debut solo single " This Is the Right Time " which became another UK Top 20 hit in August as well as reaching # 21 on the U. S. Billboard Hot 100 the following year.

The third single from Woodface, " Weather With You ", peaked at No. 7 in early 1992 giving the band their highest UK chart placement.

Progressive rock group Pink Floyd, when creating their rock opera The Wall, used disco-style components in their song, " Another Brick in the Wall, Part 2 " ( 1979 )— which became the group's only # 1 hit single ( in both the US and UK ).

* Comedy Band The Barron Knights ' 1978 UK # 3 hit single A Taste Of Aggro, a medley of parodies, included a version of The Smurf Song featuring, in place of the Smurfs, a group of bank robbers from Catford who have escaped from Dartmoor Prison.

Day's last major hit single came in the UK in 1964 with " Move Over, Darling ", co-written by her son specifically for her.

After uneven commercial success in the late 1970s, Bowie had UK number ones with the 1980 single " Ashes to Ashes ", its parent album Scary Monsters ( and Super Creeps ), and " Under Pressure ", a 1981 collaboration with Queen.

" Starman ", issued as an April single ahead of the album, was to cement Bowie's UK breakthrough: both single and album charted rapidly following his July Top of the Pops performance of the song.

At the same time the non-album single " John, I ’ m Only Dancing ", and " All the Young Dudes ", a song he wrote and produced for Mott the Hoople, became UK hits.

Young Americans was a commercial success in both the US and the UK, and a re-issue of the 1969 single " Space Oddity " became Bowie's first number one hit in the UK a few months after " Fame " achieved the same in the US.

Despite these forebodings, Low yielded the UK number three single " Sound and Vision ", and its own performance surpassed that of Station to Station in the UK chart, where it reached number two.
