Under the technical leadership of the Three Amigos, an international consortium called the UML Partners was organized in 1996 to complete the Unified Modeling Language ( UML ) specification, and propose it as a response to the OMG RFP.

During the same month the UML Partners formed a Semantics Task Force, chaired by Cris Kobryn and administered by Ed Eykholt, to finalize the semantics of the specification and integrate it with other standardization efforts.

The final distribution of seats in Parliament gave the Nepali Congress 113 ; the CPN ( UML ) 69 ; the RPP 11 ; the RJM 5 ; the NSP 5 ; the Workers and Peasants Party 1 ; and the United People's Front 1.

As of June 2006 the latest version of UML is 2. 1, MOF is 2. 0 and XMI is 2. 1.

The result of this work, UML 1. 1, was submitted to the OMG in August 1997 and adopted by the OMG in November 1997.

The use case notation from Objectory and the component notation from Booch were integrated with the rest of the notation, but the semantic integration was relatively weak in UML 1. 1, and was not really fixed until the UML 2. 0 major revision.

UML has matured significantly since UML 1. 1.

Several minor revisions ( UML 1. 3, 1. 4, and 1. 5 ) fixed shortcomings and bugs with the first version of UML, followed by the UML 2. 0 major revision that was adopted by the OMG in 2005.

ArgoUML is an UML diagramming application written in Java and released under the open source Eclipse Public License.

ArgoUML does not yet completely implement the UML standard.

Systems Modeling Language ( SysML ), a modeling language based on UML for use in Systems Engineering, has been standardized in collaboration with INCOSE.

Significant progress has also been made in bringing the world of UML modeling and the Semantic Web together through the adoption of the Ontology Definition Metamodel which relates UML models in a standard way with RDF and Web Ontology Language ( OWL ) models.

Flowcharts and UML charts can be thought of as a graphical alternative to pseudocode, but are more spacious on paper.

The current versions of these standards follow: UML Superstructure version 2. 4. 1, UML Infrastructure version 2. 4. 1, OCL version 2. 3. 1, and UML Diagram Interchange version 1. 0.

In general, every UML element may appear on almost all types of diagrams ; this flexibility has been partially restricted in UML 2. 0.

The UML 2. 0 standard still suffers many issues

Modeling experts have written criticisms of UML, including Brian Henderson-Sellers and Cesar Gonzalez-Perez in " Uses and Abuses of the Stereotype Mechanism in UML 1. x and 2. 0 ".

Additional addresses ( say, 10. 0. 0. 230-10. 0. 0. 240 ) are aliased to the loopback interface of the server ( or assigned to special interfaces, the latter typically being the case with VMware / UML / jails / vservers / other virtual server environments ) and ' published ' on the 10. 0. 0. 2 interface ( although many operating systems allow direct allocation of multiple addresses to one interface, thus eliminating the need for such tricks ).

The original version incorporated mostly content from Jim Rumbaugh's Object Modeling Technology ( OMT ) approach to modeling, Grady Booch's Booch approach and UML 1. 0.

UML 2. 0, the current version, supports thirteen different diagram techniques, and has widespread tool support.

Although UML 2. 1 was never released as a formal specification, versions 2. 1. 1 and 2. 1. 2 appeared in 2007, followed by UML 2. 2 in February 2009.

Secondly, the UML 2. x Diagram Interchange specification lacks sufficient detail to facilitate reliable interchange of UML 2. x notations between modeling tools.

Initially, OCL was only a formal specification language extension to UML.

The UML specification explicitly states that associations in class models are extensional and this is in fact self-evident by considering the extensive array of additional " adornments " provided by the specification over and above those provided by any of the prior candidate " semantic modelling languages ".

While UML 2. 1 uses the « become » stereotype within the specification, it does not define it.

The best that has been achieved is the UML Action Semantics specification created as Shlaer-Mellor migrated to the UML notation, becoming Executable UML.
