The First Transcontinental Railroad ( known originally as the " Pacific Railroad " and later as the " Overland Route ") was a railroad line built in the United States of America between 1863 and 1869 by the Central Pacific Railroad of California and the Union Pacific Railroad that connected its statutory Eastern terminus at Council Bluffs, Iowa / Omaha, Nebraska ( via Ogden, Utah, and Sacramento, California ) with the Pacific Ocean at Oakland, California on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay opposite San Francisco.

* June – Union Pacific Railroad retires the M-10001 streamliner trainset from City of Portland service, replacing it with the M-10002 trainset from the City of Los Angeles service.

* Union Pacific Railroad's M-10003-6 streamliner power cars are upgraded from two-car, 2, 400 hp sets to three three-car, 3, 600 hp sets.

The Green Diamond's nickname was the " Tobacco Worm ," because of its green color and after the " Tin Worm " nickname of the Union Pacific's first streamliner, the M-10000.

* After a year of revenue service, Union Pacific Railroad's M-10002 streamliner trainset is removed from service ; its power car is separated from its unpowered cars and the components are reused elsewhere.

* May 15 – The first City of Los Angeles passenger train makes its debut, using the streamliner trainset M-10002, running from Chicago, Illinois, to Los Angeles, California, on the Chicago and North Western Railway and the Union Pacific Railroad.

Union Pacific's M-10000 streamliner

It was the third streamliner train in North America after the Union Pacific Railroad's M-10000 and the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad's Pioneer Zephyr ; the Flying Yankee was, in fact, a virtual clone of the latter, except that it dispensed with the baggage / mail space to seat 142 in three articulated cars.

The Union Pacific Railroad's M-10001 was a record breaking diesel-electric streamliner train built in late 1934 by Pullman-Standard with an engine from General Motors Electro-Motive Corporation and General Electric generator, control equipment and traction motors.

The Union Pacific Railroad's M-10002 was a diesel-electric streamliner train built in 1936 by Pullman-Standard with a prime mover from the Winton engine division of General Motors Corporation and General Electric generator, control equipment and traction motors.

The Union Pacific Railroad's M-10003, M-10004, M-10005, and M-10006 were four identical diesel-electric streamliner train 2-car power sets delivered in May, June, and July 1936 from Pullman-Standard with engines and internal locomotive equipment by General Motors Electro-Motive Corporation and control and electrical equipment designed by the General Electric Company.

Gray was instrumental in developing the Union Pacific Railroad's burgeoning streamliner passenger train fleet, which included the famous M-10000 series of trainsets.
