On 19 September 1939, Vilnius was seized by the Soviet Union ( which invaded Poland on 17 September ).

These actions were encouraged by Soviet Union leaders until it was decided to use Vilnius as one of the pretexts to begin interfering in Lithuanian internal affairs.

Only in the 1960s did Vilnius begin to grow again, following an influx of Lithuanian and Polish population from neighbouring regions and well as from other areas of the Soviet Union ( particularly Russians and Belarusians ).

The Union of Vilnius and Radom of 1401 confirmed Vytautas's status as grand duke under Władysław's overlordship, while assuring the title of grand duke to the heirs of Władysław rather than those of Vytautas: should Władysław die without heirs, the Lithuanian boyars were to elect a new monarch.

Following Soviet invasion of Poland in September 1939, the university was briefly administered by the Lithuanian authorities ( from October 1939 ), and then after Soviet annexation of Lithuania ( June 1940 ), punctuated by a period of German occupation after German invasion of the Soviet Union ( 1941 – 1944 ), administrated as Vilnius State University by the Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic.

After Lithuania regained its independence in 1990, following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, it resumed its status as one of the prominent universities in Lithuania: Vilnius University.

The result was the Union of Vilnius and Radom in 1401.

Conferences have been held inter alia at the London School of Economics ( 1993 and 2001 ), the Federal University of Pernambuco in Recife, Brazil ( 1994 ), the Sapienza University of Rome ( 1995 ), the Université de Montréal ( 1996 ), the Free university of Amsterdam ( 1997 ), the Industrial Union in Turin ( 1998 ), the Bryn Athyn College in Pennsylvania ( 1999 ), the University of Latvia in Riga ( 2000 ), the University of Utah and Brigham Young University ( 2002 ), and the University of Vilnius ( 2003 ).

After the war Wilno ( retrieving its name as Vilnius in the process ) was annexed by the Soviet Union and Konwicki was expatriated.

The legal basis for Polish – Lithuanian relations was revisited by the Union of Vilnius and Radom of 1401, which reiterated de facto Lithuanian independence and de jure Polish supremacy.
