Mary Anne ( alternatively Mary Ann or Marian ) Evans ( 22 November 1819 – 22 December 1880 ), better known by her pen name George Eliot, was an English novelist, journalist and translator, and one of the leading writers of the Victorian era.

In Victorian Britain, campaigning journalist William Thomas Stead, ( editor of the Pall Mall Gazette ) procured a 13 year-old girl for £ 5, an amount then equal to a labourer's monthly wage ( see the Eliza Armstrong case ).

In it he portrayed a freelance journalist named Jimmy Sell set against the pub ’ s smoke-laden Victorian wallpaper.

St. Andrews is the birthplace of Thomas Storrow Brown, a businessman, journalist, and an officer of the 1837 Rebellion and Victorian artist Edward Mitchell Bannister.

Stevas edited the collected works of the Victorian journalist and politician Walter Bagehot.

The Victorian journalist George W. E. Russell ( 1953-1919 ) relates an exchange between Rogers and Benjamin Jowett ( Fifteen Chapters of Autobiography, 1914, 111-2 ):

Samuel Carter Hall ( 9 May 1800-11 March 1889 ) was an Irish-born Victorian journalist who is best known for his editorship of The Art Journal and for his much-satirised personality.

He was listed on the Victorian electoral rolls as a " journalist " when he died on 23 January 1965.

According to the company, a distillery by this name was first recorded in 1743, although at the time it was " in the hands of smugglers " ( in a quote attributed to Victorian whiskey journalist Alfred Barnard ).

The Royal Victorian Order was opened to women in 1936, and the Order of Bath and Saint Michael and Saint George in 1965 and 1971 respectively.

In Edinburgh, the 61. 1 metre tall Victorian Gothic spire of the Scott Monument was designed by George Meikle Kemp.

Lloyd George said after victory that " the nation was now in a molten state ", and his Housing Act 1919 would lead to affordable council housing which allowed people to move out of Victorian inner-city slums.

Even a female literary giant of the Victorian era, George Sand, observed " The cigar is a perfect compliment to an elegant lifestyle ".

After that, designers such as Percy Anderson, George Sheringham and Peter Goffin created Victorian costume designs.

It is not a replica, being of an ornate Victorian Gothic design based on George Gilbert Scott's Oxford Martyrs ' Memorial ( 1838 ).

Some charities and volunteer organizations have also been founded as gifts to, or in honour of, some of Canada's monarchs or members of the Royal Family, such as the Victorian Order of Nurses ( a gift to Queen Victoria for her Diamond Jubilee in 1897 ), the Canadian Cancer Fund ( set up in honour of King George V's Silver Jubilee in 1935 ), and the Queen Elizabeth II Fund to Aid in Research on the Diseases of Children.

It is notable for two reasons: the imposing Bamburgh Castle, overlooking the beach, seat of the former Kings of Northumbria, and at present owned by the Armstrong family ( see William George Armstrong ); and its association with the Victorian heroine, Grace Darling, who is buried there.

Victorian historians such as George Clark and John Parker concluded that British castles had been built for the purposes of military defence, but believed that their history was pre-Conquest – concluding that the mottes across the countryside had been built by either the Romans or Celts.

A famous Victorian apparition was the strange appearance of Vice-Admiral Sir George Tryon.

Notable inhabitants of these properties were the Markwicks ( builders and carpenters, from 1700 ) at Coppinghall and Milton Cottage ( Interestingly, the current generation of notable Markwicks in Uckfield run the local picture house ), Edward Kenward ( 19th century maltster ) at the Malt House, Thomas Pentecost ( a Victorian leather cutter and local poet ) in a cottage near the Grammar School and General Sir George Calvert Clarke ( commander of the Royal Scots Greys at Balaclava ) at Church House.

Within the Church of St. Edward is an alabaster reredos inset with carvings in white marble, designed by the famous Victorian architect George Edmund Street R. A., which was presented by Lord Eldon in 1876.

The Victorian poet George Augustus Simcox wrote a poem titled " Mordred My Master " from the perspective of Mordred's dog.

The north west corner is dominated by its Victorian Gothic style chapel by the architects George Frederick Bodley and Thomas Garner which has an interesting collection of pre-Raphaelite style paintings by John Roddam Spencer Stanhope and stained glass by William Morris.

Wilde's plays, in particular, stand apart from the many now forgotten plays of Victorian times and have a much closer relationship to those of the Edwardian dramatists such as Irishman George Bernard Shaw and Norwegian Henrik Ibsen.

A Victorian realist, in the tradition of George Eliot, he was also influenced both in his novels and poetry by Romanticism, especially by William Wordsworth.

During this time, he lived in a Victorian home at 173 Adams Street in Milton, Massachusetts, where his son, George H. W.

The Savoy Operas denote a style of comic opera that developed in Victorian England in the late 19th century, with W. S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan as the original and most successful practitioners.

W. S. Gilbert and Oscar Wilde were leading poets and dramatists of the late Victorian period.

During the Victorian era a lot of new buildings and industry were established, such as Independent Chapel ( 1822 ), Holy Trinity ( 1836 – 37 ), Christ Church ( 1837 ), Castle Railway Station ( 1846 ), Wesleyan Chapel ( 1846 ), The Corn Exchange ( 1848 ), Methodist New Connexion Chapel ( 1848 ), W. N.

Its reputation stems from a period in the 19th century when it became a sort of Victorian artists ' colony: painters such as Dante Gabriel Rossetti, J. M. W. Turner, James McNeill Whistler, William Holman Hunt, and John Singer Sargent all lived and worked here.

George W. M. Reynolds, one of the most popular British authors of the early Victorian era, moved to Herne Bay in 1854 and became one of the town's Improvement Commissioners.

All Saints ChurchWoodside is made up of a small southern triangle of residential roads, large gardens and cricket ground but includes a Manor House, church-led community hall and All Saints, Lymington, built in 1909 by W. H. Romaine-Walker, architect of Danesfield House, Moreton Hall and the Tate Gallery extension and student of High Victorian architect George Edmund Street.

Many famous people have lived or practised in Harley Street, including the Victorian prime minister William Ewart Gladstone, the artist J. M. W. Turner, and Lionel Logue, who successfully treated King George VI for his pronounced stuttering.

In the 19th century, the sensational journalism of W. T. Stead's The Maiden Tribute of Modern Babylon ( 1885 ) about the procuring of underage girls into the brothels of Victorian London provided a stimulus for the erotic imagination.

Most of the neighbourhood's eclectic shops, cafes, and other attractions are located along Augusta Ave. and neighbouring Nassau St., Baldwin St., and Kensington Ave. In addition, to the Market, the neighbourhood features many historic Victorian homes, the Toronto District School Board operates Kensington Community School and at Dundas St. W. and Bathurst St., Toronto Western Hospital is located.

This unusual gauge is otherwise found only in the Australian states of Victoria, southern New South Wales ( as part of the Victorian rail network ) and South Australia ( where it was introduced by the Irish railway engineer F. W. Sheilds ), and in Brazil.

On the Worcester to Hereford railway line is the Victorian Great Malvern station, a listed example of classical Victorian railway architecture close to the nearby former Imperial Hotel by the same architect, E. W. Elmslie.
