At the Southport Wanderers AGM in June 1886, at which a representative of Southport Football Club was present, they invited Southport to amalgamate following the severance of their connection with the Athletic Society, whose unfortunate connection with the Football Club had resulted in the Society incurring an expenditure on their account of £ 88 – 3 shillings.

A number of Wanderers players appeared in the England vs Scotland representative matches which took place prior to what is now recognised as the first official international match.

Samuel " Sam " Houghton ( born 16 August 1870 in Runcorn — died 17 August 1920 in Runcorn ) was a rugby union and professional rugby league footballer of the 1890s, playing at representative level for England, and Cheshire, and at club level for Runcorn, and Birkenhead Wanderers, as a Fullback, i. e. number 15.
