In 1938, Getty merged Tidewater with Associated Oil Company, based in San Francisco with a market area limited to the Far West.

The Shell Oil Refinery in Martinez, California, the first Shell refinery in the United States, supplies Shell and Texaco stations in the West and Midwest.

Early in the 20th century, William Nelson Page, a civil engineer and coal mining manager, joined forces with a silent partner, industrialist financier Henry Huttleston Rogers ( a principal of Standard Oil and one of the wealthiest men in the world ), to develop the Deepwater Railway, a modest 85-mile long short line railroad to access untapped bituminous coal reserves in some of the most rugged sections of southern West Virginia.

In 1895 the trustees purchased the 69 houses surrounding the Museum with the intention of demolishing them and building around the West, North and East sides of the Museum.

The Trustees planned to demolish these houses and to build around the West, North and East sides of the Museum new galleries that would completely fill the block on which the Museum stands.

Blythe House in West Kensington is used by the Museum for off-site storage of small and medium-sized artefacts, and Franks House in East London is used for storage and work on the " Early Prehistory "-Palaeolithic and Mesolithic-and some other collections.

Included in the Museum & Gallery collection are seven very large canvases, part of a series by Benjamin West painted for George III, called " The Progress of Revealed Religion ," which are displayed in the War Memorial Chapel.
