In 1880, the Wamsutta Mills took out the old Whitin spindles and added 20, 000 Rabeth spindles, which were made in Pawtucket, Rhode Island by the Fales and Jenks Machine Company.

The village's early name was " South Northbridge ", before the Whitin family's rise to prominence.

The mill complex is located in downtown Whitinsville, as is the Whitin Machine Works, or " The Shop ," an internationally renowned maker of textile machinery.

The former Whitin Machine Works, now known as the Whitinsville shop, located in the village of Whitinsville in the town of Northbridge.

The Blackstone and Mumford Rivers run through the Town and in the early 19th century numerous industrial developments were erected along the riverbanks, most notably the Whitin Machine Shop in Whitinsville, at its peak the largest manufacturer of textile machines in the world.

Whitin thus acquired ATF in 1957, began to manufacture a small ( 10 x 15 ” sheet size ) duplicator at their Whitinsville, Massachusetts facility, and to market this under the name ATF Chief 15.

Northbridge claims to history include: Native American Nipmuc lands, Colonel John Spring, who led the Uxbridge militia training company in the American Revolution, Samuel Spring, Revolutionary War Chaplain, the Residence of Ezra T. Benson 1830-1832, the birthplace of President Millard Fillmore's mother, Phoebe, and home to the Whitin Machine Works from 1831 to 1964

Since 1953 Breezy has been serving the Blackstone Valley as well as the rest of Massachusetts and neighboring states Rhode Island and Connecticut With three three hundred foot waterslides, free parking, game rooms, snack bar, certified lifeguards, and picnic tables, Breezy Picnic Grounds & Waterslides sits off the edge of the Whitin Reservoir.

In 1922, four Whitin daughters: Elsa, Katharine, Lois, and Elizabeth, gave the funds to build a gym and pool for the enjoyment of local citizens in memory of their father, George Marston Whitin.

In the location of an original Whitin estate building-the rustic teahouse-the Gerry Gaudette pavilion has been built.

Such current resources include the Whole Life Learning Center & AHB Community School.

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center – best known as simply " The Center " – has occupied the former Food & Maritime Trades High School at 208 West 13th Street since 1984.
