Satellite measurements made in 1999 with the Wide Field Infrared Explorer showed that the brightness of Altair fluctuates slightly, varying by less than a thousandth of a magnitude.

A search for a faint companion using the Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Planetary Camera revealed nothing, nor did a search with near infrared speckle interferometry.

The image was assembled from 342 separate exposures taken with the Space Telescope's Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 over ten consecutive days between December 18 and December 28, 1995.

The Medium Deep Survey ( MDS ) used the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 ( WFPC2 ) to take deep images of random fields while other instruments were being used for scheduled observations.

Most of the scientific instruments were developed by the Italian National Research Council ( CNR ) while the Wide Field Cameras were developed by the Netherlands Institute for Space Research ( SRON ) and the LECS was developed by the astrophysics division of the European Space Agency's ESTEC facility.

Atlantis carried two new instruments to the telescope, the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph and the Wide Field Camera 3.

Hoffman installed guide studs on the Wide Field Planetary Camera ( WFPC ) and prepared the WFPC for removal while Musgrave setup a work platform and worked on opening an access door to allow observation of WFPC status lights.

The new Wide Field and Planetary Camera had a higher rating than the previous model, especially in the ultraviolet range, and included its own spherical aberration correction system.

In August and September 2009, the Hubble's Deep Field was expanded using the infrared channel of the recently attached Wide Field Camera 3 ( WFC3 ).

The earlier observations, using the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 ( WFPC2 ) camera, were able to take advantage of the increased observing time on these zones by using wavelengths with higher noise to observe at times when earthshine contaminated the observations ; however ACS does not observe at these wavelengths, so the advantage was reduced.

It was installed by servicing mission 1 ( STS-61 ) in 1993, replacing the telescope's original Wide Field and Planetary Camera ( WFPC ).
