While there are many competing claims for the earliest powered, heavier-than-air flight, the most widely-accepted date is December 17, 1903 by the Wright brothers.

The feat, if true, exceeded the best of the Wright brothers first powered flights by 540 m ( 1770 ft ) and preceded the Kitty Hawk flights by more than two years, but is not accepted by most aviation historians

The Wright brothers ' use of a simple wind tunnel in 1901 to study the effects of airflow over various shapes while developing their Wright Flyer was in some ways revolutionary.

In December 1922, Wright prepared plans for the Otto Bollman House in Hollywood that included a repeated pattern of concrete blocks, a precursor to his father's more famous " textile block " houses in the Los Angeles area.
