The American Standard Code for Information Interchange ( ASCII ) was developed under the auspices of a committee of the American Standards Association, called the X3 committee, by its X3. 2 ( later X3L2 ) subcommittee, and later by that subcommittee's X3. 2. 4 working group.

The X3 committee made other changes, including other new characters ( the brace and vertical line characters ), renaming some control characters ( SOM became start of header ( SOH )) and moving or removing others ( RU was removed ).

In 1983, the American National Standards Institute formed a committee, X3J11, to establish a standard specification of C. After a long and arduous process, the standard was completed in 1989 and ratified as ANSI X3. 159-1989 " Programming Language C ." This version of the language is often referred to as " ANSI C ", or sometimes " C89 " ( to distinguish it from C99 ).

As computer technology developed, the American National Standards Institute X3 committee invented a standard method of terminal control using escape sequences called " ANSI X3. 64-1979 ".

In response to this proposal, a virtual committee was formed to design extensions to the 1992 edition of the SQL standard ( ANSI X3. 135 .- 1992 and ISO / IEC 9075: 1992 ); those extensions, known as TSQL2, were developed during 1993 by this committee meeting only via email.

X3J13 is the name of a technical committee which was part of INCITS ( known at the time as X3 ).

The final standard produced by the X3J13 committee was published as American National Standard X3. 226, and also in hypertext form as the Common Lisp HyperSpec.

The algorithm is also specified in ANSI X3. 92, NIST SP 800-67 and ISO / IEC 18033-3 ( as a component of TDEA ).

The control sequences used by the VT100 family are based on the ANSI X3. 64 standard, also known as ECMA-48 and ISO / IEC 6429.

Work on the ASCII standard began on October 6, 1960, with the first meeting of the American Standards Association's ( ASA ) X3. 2 subcommittee.

The X3. 2 subcommittee designed ASCII based on earlier teleprinter encoding systems.

With the other special characters and control codes filled in, ASCII was published as ASA X3. 4-1963, leaving 28 code positions without any assigned meaning, reserved for future standardization, and one unassigned control code.

The X3. 2. 4 task group voted its approval for the change to ASCII at its May 1963 meeting.

ASCII was subsequently updated as USASI X3. 4-1967, then USASI X3. 4-1968, ANSI X3. 4-1977, and finally, ANSI X3. 4-1986 ( the first two are occasionally retronamed ANSI X3. 4-1967, and ANSI X3. 4-1968 ).

ISO / IEC 646 and its predecessor ASCII ( ANSI X3. 4 ) largely endorsed existing practice regarding character encodings in the telecommunications industry.
