The territory includes Ashmore Reef ( West, Middle, and East Islets ) and Cartier Island ( 70 km east ) with, a total area of within the reefs and including the lagoons, and 114, 400 m² of dry land.

Two lagoons are in the area, Coyuca to the northwest of Acapulco Bay and Tres Palos to the southeast.

Here are the remains of a Roman town, belonging to the 1st and 2nd centuries, extending over an area of some 600 by 500 meters (( 2, 000 by 1, 600 ft ), and consisting of fine buildings along the lagoons, including a large open piscina or basin, surrounded by a double portico, while farther inland are several very large and well-preserved water-reservoirs, supplied by an aqueduct of which traces may still be seen.

* Lansdowne Bank, west of New Caledonia ( 21000 km² ), submerged, least depth 3. 7 m More sources however list as the largest atoll in the world in terms of land area Kiritimati, which is also a raised coral atoll ( 321. 37 km² land area ; according to other sources even 575 km² ), 160 km² main lagoon, 168 km² other lagoons ( according to other sources 319 km² total lagoon size ).

It is a vast plain comprising large brine lagoons or étangs, cut off from the sea by sandbars and encircled by reed-covered marshes which are in turn surrounded by a large cultivated area.

When missionaries established the Mission Santa Cruz in 1791, they noted " an area to the east of the San Lorenzo River " in sight of the Sea " that was crisscrossed by " steep gulches containing running water " and three " reed-lined " lagoons.

Ghosts of about a dozen partially dredged lagoons in that area, as well as a curious curve in Newell Ave, indicate the planned expansion.

Approximately half the area of the park is open Baltic Sea ; more than another quarter covers parts of the lagoons in the Darss-Zingst Bodden Chain including the West Rügen Bodden.

The inner Firth, i. e. between the Kincardine and Forth bridges, has lost about half of its former intertidal area as a result of land being reclaimed, partly for agriculture, but mainly for industry and the large ash lagoons built to deposit the spoil from the coal fired Longannet Power Station near Kincardine.

Leighton Moss contains the largest area of reedbeds in north-west England, along with lagoons and woodland, and provides habitats for many species of wildlife, including bitterns and red deer.

The name appears as a competitor with the names of the lagoons of Manguaba, a lagoa do sul (" the southern lagoon "), and Mundaú, a lagoa do norte (" the northern lagoon "), already in the 16th century, when settlements were founded near the Alagoa do Norte and the Alagoa do Sul, the Alagoas, with the inclusion of the rest of the lagoons in the area.

Investment in the Sewage Treatment Works within the catchment area has improved the quality of the discharges into the river and modifications to the runway and apron drainage systems at Gatwick Airport means that surface water is diverted to aerated pollution control lagoons and balancing ponds for treatment prior to being released into the river.

Comprising 97 islands and islets, it has a land area of 16. 4 km² ( 6. 33 mi² ), and surrounds one of the largest lagoons in the world, with an area of 2174 km² ( 839 mi² ).

Another important conservation area is the Parnaíba River delta, between the states of Maranhão and Piauí, with its lagoons, desert dunes and deserted beaches or islands, such as the Caju island, which shelters rare birds.

The Institute is located 17 km away from Kavala, in Nea Peramos, at the centre of a marine area with rich fishery grounds and high biodiversity in the surrounding lagoons, lakes and rivers.

Lightly settled from 1689, its main industry, in common with much of the area along Great South Bay and South Oyster Bay ( both actually lagoons ), was the harvesting of salt hay, which was used as cattle feed and bedding.

The closest modern analogue to the Solnhofen conditions is said to be Orca Basin in the northern Gulf of Mexico, though that area is much deeper than the Solnhofen lagoons.

Beach culture is very prominent in this area and many of the regions beaches and lagoons are part of protected areas to ensure the environment remains pristine.

A main hydrological factor is that Sudd area, consisting of various meandering channels, lagoons, reed and papyrus fields, loses half of the inflowing water through evapotranspiration in the permanent and seasonal floodplains.

The fluvial area is mostly overgrown with vegetation, with some main and side channels as well as lagoons of open water.

The Arabat Spit is 112 km long, and from 270 m to 8 km wide ; its surface area is 395 km < sup > 2 </ sup > and thus the average width is 3. 5 km.

The 1852 stranding of the schooner Captain Lincoln on the North Spit and the survivors ' encampment and rescue brought attention to gold prospectors who came to mine placer from area beaches.

HMS Constance, commanded by Captain Courtenay, was a frequent visitor to the area, and was one of the first ships to use Augusta Bay and a long sandy hook-shaped spit ( now " the Goose Spit ") for gunnery practice.

In 1876, the Royal Navy, desiring a permanent presence in the area, built a naval base on the Goose Spit despite the presence of the K ' ómoks burial grounds.

For whatever reason, these first boats which were meant to land on a two mile ( 6 km ) front between Hell Spit and Gaba Tepe ended up concentrated about Ari Burnu, 1. 5 miles ( 2. 4 km ) north of their intended landing area — in fact, in the landing area of the 2nd Brigade which was to follow.

They too had moved too far to the north but were in places closer to the planned landing area — the Beagle unloaded south of Hell Spit on the intended beach, far enough south in fact that she came under machine gun fire from Gaba Tepe.

If ( hypothetically ) the source area to the south-west were cut off, say, by a large port construction with a pier, the Spit would erode and eventually disappear.

After the breakup of the Soviet Union, tourism flourished ; many Germans, mostly the descendants of the inhabitants of the area, choose the Curonian Spit ( especially Nida, as no visas are needed for Germans in Lithuania ) as their holiday destination.

This, coupled with the opening of the Spit and Roseville bridges in 1924 led to increased interest and travel to the area, which increased even further with the opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge in 1932.

Instead this area today home to Cherry Beach, while the large breakwater known as the Leslie Street Spit is today a popular park and birding area.

Apart from a small area at the base of the Spit it is closed to the public except through organized tours.

Hurst Spit is a barrier beach which shelters an area of saltmarsh and mud flats known as Keyhaven and Pennington marshes.

The area of water now located between Sewells Point and Willoughby Spit became known as Willoughby Bay.

It connects the historic Phoebus area of the independent city of Hampton near Fort Monroe on the Virginia Peninsula with Willoughby Spit in the city of Norfolk in South Hampton Roads, and is part of the Hampton Roads Beltway.

The band took its name from the Leslie Street Spit area of Toronto Harbour.

The area which became the Town of Phoebus was founded in 1609 as Mill Creek ; it was located on the banks of the Chesapeake Bay and Hampton Roads, directly across from Norfolk's Willoughby Spit.

The area known as Willoughby Spit takes its name from Thomas Willoughby, who came to Virginia in 1610 and received a land grant around 1625.

The area of water now located between Sewell's Point and Willoughby Spit is known as Willoughby Bay.

The Willoughby Spit area was to remain part of Norfolk County for over 225 years.

The Ocean View area was to remain part of Norfolk County for over 225 years, until it and the adjacent Willoughby Spit area were annexed by the independent City of Norfolk in 1923.

The area which became known as Ocean View City was originally a 360 acre ( 1. 5 km² ) tract called the Magagnos Plantation which had extensive frontage on the Chesapeake Bay east of Willoughby Spit and west of Little Creek.
