The city's Cathedral of the Holy Wisdom ( 1044 – 66 ), though completely rebuilt over the years, remains a symbol of this independent-mindedness, rivaling churches of the same name in Novgorod and Kiev, referring to the original Hagia Sophia in Constantinople ( and hence to claims of imperial prestige, authority and sovereignty ).

* Kolomotu ' a ( Kolo meaning " town " or " settlement ", motu ' a meaning " old "), encompassing the city's original settlement at the old fort of Nukualofa, including the area of Tavatu ' utolu ( Longolongo ), Sopu ' o Vave ( now Sopu ' o Taufa ' ahau ), Tongata ' eapa, Tufuenga, Kapeta and all the western area where it was the traditional settlement of the Tu ' i Kanokupolu from Mumui the 13th Tu ' i Kanokupolu to Aleamotu ' a the 18th Tu ' i Kanokupolu.

The city's main street is named Last Chance Gulch and lies close to the winding path of the original gulch through the historic downtown district.

An end to the " closed " status of the city accompanied the reinstatement of the city's original name in 1990.

Pre-1778 artifacts that never left the city since its founding include the Vajradhara statue made by Zanabazar himself in 1683 ( the city's main deity kept at the Vajradhara temple ), a highly ornate throne presented to Zanabazar by the Kangxi Emperor ( before 1723 ), a sandalwood hat presented to Zanabazar by the Dalai Lama ( c. 1663 ), Zanabazar's large fur coat which was also presented by the Kangxi Emperor and a great number of original statues made by Zanabazar himself ( e. g. the Green Tara ).

In 2008, the portion of Route 101 that runs from the Conejo Grade to the Old Town district of Camarillo was dedicated as the Adolfo Camarillo Memorial Highway to honor the city's namesake and extends through the boundaries of the original Camarillo family ranch.

However it is not until the 10th century that written references to Provençana ( the city's original name ) appear.

The city's original name is unknown, but a Mohenjo-daro seal suggests a possible ancient Dravidian name in Kukkutarma (" the city of the cock ").

The city's downtown is dominated by state government buildings, especially the State Capitol ; but downtown has also experienced recent growth in new restaurants, retail stores and residential developments.

The city's downtown lies just north of Lake Sammamish ; residential areas lie north and west of the lake.

The Sammamish River runs north from the lake along the west edge of the city's downtown.

* Establish programs expanding and renovating the city's library, constructing 800 new housing units including the Gaia Building downtown, and lowering crime.

* April 19 – The Great Toronto Fire destroys much of that city's downtown, but there are no fatalities.

The Policía Regia protects the city's downtown and main areas, while the State Public Safety is in charge of the farthest areas.

The city's main thoroughfare, which roughly follows the river, changes names over its length, but the central tree-lined section running through the downtown core is called the Prado.

Today, " the Strand " is generally used to refer to the entire five-block business district between 20th and 25th streets in downtown Galveston, very close to the city's wharf.

The city's tourist attractions include the Galveston Schlitterbahn waterpark, Moody Gardens botanical park, the Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig & Museum, the Lone Star Flight Museum, Galveston Railroad Museum, a downtown neighborhood of historic buildings known as The Strand, many historical museums and mansions, and miles of beach front from the East End's Porretto Beach, Stewart Beach to the West End pocket parks. Also there is a pier-turned-amusement park that opened May 2012. it is called Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier.

The Galveston County Administrative Courthouse, the seat of civil and administrative functions, is located near the city's downtown.

A notable exception was the city's construction of the Myriad Gardens and Crystal Bridge, a botanical garden and modernistic conservatory in the heart of downtown.

In 1993, the city passed a massive redevelopment package known as the Metropolitan Area Projects ( MAPS ), intended to rebuild the city's core with civic projects to establish more activities and life to downtown.
