One of the club's directors Henry Norris, and his friend William Hill, took over Arsenal in the early 1910s, the plan being to merge Fulham with Arsenal, to form a " London superclub " at Craven Cottage.

In the 2003 – 04 season, Charlton spent much of the campaign challenging for a Champions League place, but a late-season slump in form, combined with the sale of star player Scott Parker to Chelsea, left Charlton in 7th place, which was still the club's highest finish since the 1950s.

His injury was reflected in the club's form, and Newcastle finished just 13th in the League.

He was unable to prevent the club's relegation to League Two that season, and although the club were top of the table in August 2004, a loss of form saw them fall down the table.

When former Everton player Joe Royle took over in 1994 the club's form started to improve ; his first game in charge was a 2 – 0 victory over derby rivals Liverpool.

Wednesday's fortunes took a turn for the worse when a succession of managers failed to maintain this form, first David Pleat and later Danny Wilson spent small fortunes building squads that were ultimately ineffective, and the club's debts got out of control as a result.

On the club's shield, in the form of a rhombus, were the initials SSPI.

The club's form in Serie A remains uncertain, as it was relegated in 1987, 1994, 1998, 2003, 2005 and 2010.

Despite the lack of resources, a number of young talented players were found to play for the club ; crucially, when many of these moved on, including Stephen Pearson and James McFadden, they brought revenue in the form of transfer fees, and with John Boyle waiving the club's personal debt to him, its financial future was assured by the conclusion of the 2004 – 05 season with the club's yearly losses falling to one of the lowest figures in the Premier League and the club coming out of administration in time to avoid a ten-point Premier League penalty which was being phased in for teams in administration.

The club's form in the remainder of the 1940s was largely indifferent, with the exception of a Cheshire League Challenge Cup win in 1948.

The club's main colours ( blue and white ) are evident throughout the badge both in the mantling and in the shield, in the form of stripes.

The club's form nosedived in the 1921 – 22 season, with a finishing position of nineteenth, before bouncing back to a fifth-placed finish in the following campaign.

During the match, a selection of the home crowd targeted Houllier with chants of " you're getting sacked in the morning " to vent their frustration at the club's poor run of form.

The club's league form also failed to improve.

The Stade Georges Lefèvre of the Camp des Loges was the main stadium of Stade Saint-Germain until the club's merger with Paris FC to form Paris Saint-Germain in 1970.

The 1985 – 86 season saw a marked improvement in the club's league form, eventually finishing in fourth position, a then-club record high which would stand for 17 years until 2002 – 03.

Arsenal's form immediately improved, so much so that the club were top of the League at Christmas 1986, the club's centenary, for the first time in a decade.

The club's foundation dates back to the very earliest days of organised football in Scotland, when a group of local cricketers looking for a sporting pursuit to occupy them out with the cricket season looked to form a football club.

Dismal form in the league had seen Rush dropped from the first eleven, with Souness favouring the likes of Ronny Rosenthal and Paul Stewart, but Rush returned to his peak during the final weeks of the season and he finished the season as the club's top scorer with 14 league goals.

The 2008 – 09 season saw Carlisle start promisingly but it was soon followed by one of the worst runs of form in the club's history.

The club's financial problems meant that Gregory hadn't purchased any players during the 2002-03 season, and their subsequent form in Division One was disappointing.

The club's promising early season form ( which saw Hoddle voted Premier League Manager of the Month for October 2001 ) dwindled away into mediocrity and they finished ninth in the Premiership, an improvement on the previous season's 11th place but considerably less than what most people had been expecting.

As for the new club's name, Benfica from Sport Clube de Benfica was added to the Sport Lisboa of Grupo Sport Lisboa to form Sport Lisboa e Benfica, which remains the formal full name of Benfica today.

The victory also marked the club's 91st win of the season, breaking the franchise record set in 2007.

The Royals finished the season 69-93, but 2007 marked the club's first season with fewer than 100 losses since 2003.

In 2007, Drogheda United won the League of Ireland for the first time in the club's history.

In September 2007, planning permission was confirmed for the club's new ground, which will be at Falmer, still within the city limits but on the Brighton side.

On October 4, 2007, the Blue Jackets announced their affiliation with the Elmira Jackals, which replaced their former affiliation with the Dayton Bombers as the club's ECHL affiliate.

The 2007 – 08 season, the club's first full season under Hitchcock, started off well as the Jackets got off to their best start in franchise history, starting with a 4 – 0 shutout of the defending Stanley Cup champion Anaheim Ducks.

On 22 October 2007, it was announced the club's p. l. c.

Despite QPR's perilous financial condition in 2007 / 2008, the combined personal wealth of the club's new owners ( which included the world's then 8th richest man Lakshmi Mittal ) sparked speculation that QPR would receive significant further investment from their new benefactors drawing parallels to their wealthy West London neighbours Chelsea and Fulham.

The investment potential of the club's new backers resulted in a number of wildly speculative storylines in the football press throughout the 2007 – 08 season including rumoured signings of former World Player of the Year winners Luís Figo and Zinedine Zidane ( the latter as a possible manager ).

Following the termination of the club's sponsorship deals with Car Giant, Le Coq Sportif, and Sellotape at the end of the 2007 – 08 season, in early July 2008 it was expected to be announced that Gulf Air would be the new shirt sponsors for 3 years.

Owen began light training on 12 February 2007, when pictures on the club's official website highlighted Owen running and carrying out minor exercises.

Throughout the 2007 – 08 season, Riise's natural place in the side was often taken by Fábio Aurélio, the Brazilian establishing himself as the club's first choice left-back.

The Manchester exhibition centre Urbis hosted an exhibition celebrating the 25th anniversary of the club's opening, which ran from mid-July 2007 until mid-February 2008.

Following the takeover of the club's sponsor in 2006, the club renamed itself as The New Saints They moved to the redeveloped Park Hall Stadium on the outskirts of the town in September 2007. Also now playing at Park Hall are Oswestry Lions football club who play in the Shropshire county league.

In September 2007, Tony DiCicco was appointed as the club's first head coach.

The club's new Clay Shaw Butler Stand has a 1000 seat capacity which enabled Carmarthen Town to host the club's first ever home European fixture at the ground in July 2007 when they entertained Norwegian side SK Brann.

On 25 May 2007, Houllier stepped down as boss of Olympique Lyonnais, due to a fractious relationship with outspoken chairman Jean-Michel Aulas, who was frustrated at the club's inability to convert domestic dominance into European success.

For the 2007 – 08 season, Wigan's home shirt returned to the club's traditional blue and white stripes, having been blue with white sleeves the previous season as well.

This merger is planned to happen at the end of this 2006 / 2007 season and should be the start of another chapter in the club's long history.

The seasons 2007 – 08 and 2008 – 09 will remain as one of the most successful in club's history.
