The eugenicist Madison Grant of New York wrote in his book, The Passing of the Great Race ( 1916 ): " The cross between a white man and an Indian is an Indian ; the cross between a white man and a Negro is a Negro ; the cross between a white man and a Hindu is a Hindu ; and the cross between any of the three European races and a Jew is a Jew.

Madison Grant ( November 19, 1865 – May 30, 1937 ) was an American lawyer, historian and physical anthropologist, known primarily for his work as a eugenicist and conservationist.

While this group had no special place in Deniker's racial model, this " Nordic race " would be elevated by the famous eugenicist and scientific racist Madison Grant in his Nordic theory to the engine of civilization.

New York eugenicist Madison Grant worked to ensure his model of the " one-drop rule " was implemented by the Virginia registrar of statistics, Walter Ashby Plecker, who developed the racial criteria behind the act.

For example, in 1906, Congolese pygmy Ota Benga was put by anthropologist Madison Grant in a cage in the Bronx Zoo, labelled " the missing link " between an orangutan and the " white race " — Grant, a renowned eugenicist, was also the author of The Passing of the Great Race ( 1916 ).

As a eugenicist, Grant was responsible for one of the most famous works of scientific racism, and played an active role in crafting strong immigration restriction and anti-miscegenation laws in the United States.

As an avid eugenicist, Grant further advocated the separation, quarantine, and eventual collapse of " undesirable " traits and " worthless race types " from the human gene pool and the promotion, spread, and eventual restoration of desirable traits and " worthwhile race types " conducive to Nordic society:

In response Grant founded the Galton Society with American eugenicist and biologist Charles B. Davenport in 1918 as an alternative to Boas.

Grant was a eugenicist and an advocate of the racial hygiene theory.

At the behest of Grant, a prominent eugenicist, the zoo director William Hornaday placed Ota Benga displayed in a cage with the chimpanzees, then with an orangutan named Dohong, and a parrot, and labeled him The Missing Link, suggesting that in evolutionary terms Africans like Ota Benga were closer to apes than were Europeans.

A decade later, Grant became prominent as a racial anthropologist and eugenicist.

After the war, he returned to eugenicist and segregationist activism, and The Pioneer Fund supported the work of a number of noted and controversial researchers of race and intelligence, including William Shockley, Arthur Jensen, J. Philippe Rushton, and Roger Pearson.

Henry Fairfield Osborn, Sr. ForMemRS ( August 8, 1857 – November 6, 1935 ) was an American geologist, paleontologist, and eugenicist, and the president of the American Museum of Natural History for 25 years.

Despite his considerable scientific stature during the 1900s and 1910s, Osborn's scientific achievements have not held up well, for they were undermined by ongoing efforts to bend scientific findings to fit his own racist and eugenicist viewpoints.

He was a eugenicist and businessman who made millions by developing shatter-proof plastic eyeglass lenses, and who later founded the Repository for Germinal Choice, a sperm bank for geniuses in the hope of implementing a eugenics program.

Dr. Plecker, a leading eugenicist physician who was the registrar of vital statistics from 1912 to 1946, lobbied for years to get the eugenics laws passed in Virginia.

The Pioneer Fund was headed by the eugenicist, Harry H. Laughlin, an advocate for restrictive immigration laws and national programs of compulsory sterilization of the mentally ill and mentally retarded.

Founded in 1945 on what used to be a pear orchard and hop ranch, the arboretum was originally named the Charles M. Goethe Arboretum in honor of Charles Goethe ( 1875 – 1966, pronounced " geh-teh "), a land developer, philanthropist, conservationist, eugenicist and one of the university's founding fathers, " the name was changed without fanfare to University Arboretum in 2005 " because of renewed attention to Goethe's virulently racist views, praise of Nazi Germany, and advocacy for eugenics.
