Since 1991, several thousand students from 21 countries have come to Achill to study and participate in ongoing excavations.

During the turn of the 20th century British Israelites carried out some excavations of the Hill of Tara in Ireland looking for the Ark of the Covenant – the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland campaigned successfully to have them stopped before they destroyed the hill.

Two Aegean vases were found at Sidon in 1885, and many fragments of Aegean and especially Cypriot pottery have been found during recent excavations of sites in Philistia by the Palestine Fund.

Recent excavations at the Viking harbor town of Fröjel, Gotland in Sweden have revealed a small number of rock crystal lenses known as the Visby lenses.

In Denmark, recent archaeological excavations at Lejre, where Scandinavian tradition located the seat of the Scyldings, i. e., Heorot, have revealed that a hall was built in the mid-6th century, exactly the time period of Beowulf.

However, there is evidence of large fires and charred bones from excavations at the site, showing it to have been ritually significant.

Stolpe speculated that the island may have been an important trading post, prompting him to conduct a series of archeological excavations between 1871-95.

The evidence for this assertion is still fairly scanty, though excavations at Dun Bharabhat, Lewis, have supported it.

Most brochs have scarcements ( ledges ) which would have allowed the construction of a very sturdy wooden first floor ( first spotted by the antiquary George Low in Shetland in 1774 ), and excavations at Loch na Berie on the Isle of Lewis show signs of a further, second floor ( e. g. stairs on the first floor, which head upwards ).

Not surprisingly, crannogs have useful defensive properties, although there appears to be more significance to prehistoric use than simple defense as very few weapons or evidence for destruction appear in excavations of prehistoric crannogs.

From the archaeological excavations in the 1970s, it is clear that construction took over most of the site of the earlier temple enclosure and that the Triportico and Rotunda roughly overlapped with the temple building itself ; the excavations indicate that the temple extended at least as far back as the Aedicule, and the temple enclosure would have reached back slightly further.

Virgilio Canio Corbo, a Franciscan priest and archaeologist, who was present at the excavations, estimated from the archaeological evidence that the western retaining wall, of the temple itself, would have passed extremely close to the east side of the supposed tomb ; if the wall had been any further west any tomb would have been crushed under the weight of the wall ( which would be immediately above it ) if it had not already been destroyed when foundations for the wall were made.

Etruscan coins have turned up in caches or individually in tombs and in excavations seemingly at random, concentrated, of course, in Etruria.

Samos excavations have revealed votive offerings, many of them late 8th and 7th centuries BC, which show that Hera at Samos was not merely a local Greek goddess of the Aegean: the museum there contains figures of gods and suppliants and other votive offerings from Armenia, Babylon, Iran, Assyria, Egypt, testimony to the reputation which this sanctuary of Hera enjoyed and to the large influx of pilgrims.

Under the direction of the German Archaeological Institute, excavations at Hattusa have been underway since 1907, with interruptions during both wars.

Smaller scale excavations have also been carried out in the immediate surroundings of Hattusa, including the rock sanctuary of Yazılıkaya, which contains numerous rock-cut relief's portraying the Hittite rulers and the gods of the Hittite pantheon.

He describes his passage on ships to the wilderness-to the Company's station, which strikes Marlow as a scene of devastation: " amongst a waste of excavations "-disorganized, machinery parts here and there, now and then explosions of demolition, weakened native black men, that have been demoralized, in chains, literally being worked to death, and strolling behind them a white Company man in a uniform carrying a rifle.

However, despite intensive excavations, archaeologists have found no evidence of a prehistoric major settlement in the area.

Works of embellishment were not confined to churches alone: excavations at the site of the Great Palace of Constantinople have yielded several high-quality mosaics dating from Justinian's reign, and a column topped by a bronze statue of Justinian on horseback and dressed in a military costume was erected in the Augustaeum in Constantinople in 543.

It is also widely held by scholars that the island was not occupied by humans during the Middle Bronze Age ( 2300 – 1600 ), though researchers have recently suggested that the lack of evidence from this period may only demonstrate the lack of excavations on Chios and the northern Aegean.

Modern excavations have discovered portions tapering column drums that may belonged to the turning posts at either end of the race-course, from whose location it appears that the hippodrome could have had a length of 320 meters and a width of 140.

In reality, however, the number of chariots in Ahab's forces was probably closer to number in the hundreds ( this due to archaeological excavations of the area and the foundations of stables that had been found ).

During the Acropolis excavations in Athens, which terminated in 1888, many potsherds of the Mycenaean style were found ; but Olympia had yielded either none, or such as had not been recognized before being thrown away, and the temple site at Delphi produced nothing distinctively Aegean ( in dating ).

The dating of the events in the poem has been confirmed by archaeological excavations of the barrows indicated by Snorri Sturluson and by Swedish tradition as the graves of Ohthere ( dated to c. 530 ) and his son Eadgils ( dated to c. 575 ) in Uppland, Sweden.

Stratigraphic analysis from the most recent excavations showed prehistoric human activity at the altar site, which seems to have been in continuous use from the Late Neolithic period through to the Hellenistic era.

While little is known about Morocco settlement in these early times, excavations elsewhere in the Maghreb suggest an abundance of game and forests that would have been hospitable to Mesolithic hunters and gatherers.

Neanderthal remains have been found to the west of Maastricht ( Belvédère excavations ).

An exceptional piece of evidence for the use of microliths has been found in the excavations of the cave at Lascaux in the French Dordogne.

Human remains dating to 6000 BC have been discovered during recent excavations around a cave at Varana Raja Maha vihara and in the Kalatuwawa area.

It has not been dated but speculation that it represents careless backfilling following earlier excavations seems disproved by its representation in 18th-and 19th-century illustrations.

However, excavations of Jerusalem have shown a distinct lack of monumental architecture from the era, and remains of neither the Temple nor Solomon's palace have been found.

The 1972 excavations reached layers that had remained waterlogged and had preserved items that otherwise would have been destroyed.

Gwyn Jones notes that " no true town has been found and excavated " and that the identification of the site in Elbląg with Truso is based on " finds of Norse weapons " and the presence of " a large Viking Age cemetery " nearby, According to Mateusz Bogucki " by now, there is no doubt that the settlement really is Wulfstan's Truso " The Elbląg Museum brochure: Truso-A Discovered Legend, by Marek F Jagodziński, describes a large number of buildings found during the recent excavations, with burnt remains of posts suggesting buildings of c. 5 x 10 m and long houses of about 6 x 21 m.

However, it had been built to Major League specifications and also located in a natural bowl, meaning only minor excavations would be necessary to expand the park to accommodate Major League crowds.

Some of the " mountains " of broken pottery are debris that has been removed from excavations.

Since then, a series of excavations has exposed further sections of seating, curved turn and central barrier but further exploration has been limited by the scale, depth and waterlogging of the site.

Overseas excavations continued and John Turtle Wood discovered the remains of the 4th century BC Temple of Artemis at Ephesos, another Wonder of the Ancient World.

The Museum continued to collect from all countries and all centuries: among the most spectacular additions were the 2600 BC Mesopotamian treasure from Ur, discovered during Leonard Woolley's 1922 – 34 excavations.

Active support by the Museum for excavations in Egypt continued to result in useful acquisitions throughout the 20th century until changes in antiquities laws in Egypt led to the suspension of policies allowing finds to be exported.

The excavations, carried out by the École française d ' Athènes, were renewed in 1920 and continued until 1937.

Herbert E. Balch continued the work from 1904 to 1914, where he led excavations of the entrance passage ( 1904 – 15 ), Witch's Kitchen ( Chamber 1 ) and Hell's Ladder ( 1926 – 1927 ) and the Badger Hole ( 1938 – 1954 ), where Roman coins from the 3rd century were discovered along with Aurignacian flint implements.

Their palace ( ἀνάκτορον ) has been discovered ( the excavations started in 1926 and continued until 1995 ) in Pellana, Laconia, to the north-west of modern ( and classical ) Sparta.

By 1931, much of Mohenjo-Daro had been excavated, but excavations continued, such as that led by Sir Mortimer Wheeler, director of the Archaeological Survey of India in 1944.

Despite Barringer's findings and other excavations in the early 20th century, geologists ' skepticism continued until the 1950s when planetary science gained in maturity and understanding of cratering processes increased.

In the following year, Petrie continued excavations at the same location, but now suffered from the competition of a German and an Egyptian art dealer.
