The Ministry of the Environment reported that the lake's water level had dropped by fifty centimeters in 1993.

The lake's area is of surface water.

In the two bays that receive most of the lake's fresh water inflows, Bear River Bay and Farmington Bay, the diversity of organisms is much higher.

The extremely high methyl mercury concentrations have been only in the lake's anoxic deep brine layer ( monimolimnion ) below a depth of 20 ' ( 6 m ), but concentrations are also moderately high up in the water column where there is oxygen to support brine shrimp and brine flies.

An increased demand on the lake's water from the local population has likely accelerated its shrinkage over the past 40 years.

About 70 rivers and 150 temporary streams flow into the lake, the largest of them, Chulyshman River, supplying more than half of the lake's water.

A peninsula which extends into the lake, called Captain's Island, contains 178 houses, and there are another 143 houses along the lake's shores.

Because of a lack of major rivers flowing into the lake to naturally replenish it, concern exists that any rise in temperature and evaporation through climate change could cause an extremely rapid collapse in the lake's level.

Seismic activity caused by the lake's volcanic foundation could thus cause the lake wall to give way, resulting in up to 50 million cubic metres ( 1. 8 billion cu ft ) of water flooding downhill into areas of the Northwest Province and the Nigerian states of Taraba and Benue.
