The lake has been identified by BirdLife International as an Important Bird Area ( IBA ) because, when flooded, it supports major breeding events of the Banded Stilt and Australian Pelican, as well as over 1 % of the world populations of Red-necked Avocets, Sharp-tailed Sandpipers, Red-necked Stints, Silver Gulls and Caspian Terns.
