The polygonal walls of the acropolis may still be seen in a fair state of preservation on a circular hill standing about above the little plain of Exarcho ; one gateway remains, and there are also traces of town walls below.

The final palace, remains of which are currently visible on the acropolis of Mycenae, dates to the start of LHIIIA: 2.

Pausanias states that in the middle of the 2nd century AD, the remains of an egg-shell, tied up in ribbons, were still suspended from the roof of a temple on the Spartan acropolis.

The acropolis ( 280 ft ) has an amphitheatre on its northern slope, and eastwards lie many remains of Byzantine buildings.

Etruscan remains establish that the acropolis of San Cornelio, a small hill next to that of San Donatus, was occupied and fortified in the Etruscan period.

There is an underground Byzantine cistern, located in the Second Courtyard, which was used throughout Ottoman times, as well as remains of a small church, the so-called Palace Basilica on the acropolis have also been excavated in modern times.

To the west of Volos lie the Neolithic settlements of Dimini, with a ruined acropolis, walls, and two beehive tombs dating to between 4000-1200 BC, Sesklo, with the remains of the oldest acropolis in Greece ( 6000 BC ), and also the foundations of a palace and mansions, among its most characteristic examples of Neolithic civilisation.

In the outskirts of Mtskheta are the ruins of Armaztsikhe fortress ( 3rd century BC ), the Armaztsikhe acropolis ( dating to the late 1st millennium BC ), remains of a " Pompey's bridge " ( according to legends built by Roman legionnaires of Pompey the Great in 1st century BC ), the fragmentary remains of a royal palace ( 1st – 3rd century AD ), a nearby tomb of the 1st century AD, a small church of the 4th century, the Samtavro Monastery ( 11th century ), and the fortress of Bebris Tsikhe ( 14th century ).

* The remains of the Roman Aqueduct, which connected the acropolis with the springs of Romanos.

On the acropolis and in a plain to the east, Tre Breci, is a site continuously occupied from the Neolithic to the Iron Age, in addition to the remains of Etruscan Luni ( which was then in Etruria ) on a higher plateau nearby.

Dr Mehmet Taşlıalan, who has studied the remains of Antioch in Pisidia, has remarked that the people who settled on the acropolis in the Greek colonial era, carried the Men Askaenos cult down to the plain as Patrios Theos and in the place where the Augusteum was built there are some signs of this former cult as bucrania on the rock-cut walls.

The city's remains today consist of an acropolis, some rock-cut tombs, tumuli, a bridge and remains of houses with mosaic tile floors.

An old arch within the territory of the comune is said to be Roman, and some remains of the ancient acropolis have survived, but otherwise Trevi's monuments are medieval or later:

The acropolis was just below the villa: here remains of temples were found.

On the high hill to the north of the city, a few ancient remains indicate that it was the site of an acropolis.

At first, the fortress was set up as earthen bulwarks, but soon after, it was fortified with stone, the remains of which can be seen today near the northeastern corner of the acropolis.

However, on the Gradina hill, above the famous archeological site of Carine, a fortification is situated containing remains of an Illyrian-Greek acropolis, as well as the medieval and Turkish stratum.

* Structures ; Ruins of palaces, palatial villas, houses, built dome-or cist-graves and fortifications ( Aegean islands, Greek mainland and northwestern Anatolia ), but not distinct temples ; small shrines, however, and temene ( religious enclosures, remains of one of which were probably found at Petsofa near Palaikastro by J. L. Myres in 1904 ) are represented on intaglios and frescoes.

Several other fortifications were constructed, making Malmö Sweden's most fortified city, but only Malmöhus remains.

Until the early 20th century, the chief ancient buildings at Sparta were the theatre, of which, however, little showed above ground except portions of the retaining walls ; the so-called Tomb of Leonidas, a quadrangular building, perhaps a temple, constructed of immense blocks of stone and containing two chambers ; the foundation of an ancient bridge over the Eurotas ; the ruins of a circular structure ; some remains of late Roman fortifications ; several brick buildings and mosaic pavements.

Indeed, aside from the many Roman-related finds along the southern coast and the fully romanized area around Caerwent, Roman archaeological remains in Wales consist almost entirely of military roads and fortifications.

Much of its historic heritage remains intact, and today there are always renovations going on in the city to preserve the many old buildings, fortifications, churches and statues for later generations.

Scythian archaeology also examines the remains of North Pontic Scythian cities and fortifications.

Les Casemates, place Nervienne. The casemates and the bakery are the remains of military fortifications dating from the kingdom of the Netherlands ( 1814 – 1830 ).

In the course of its history Monza withstood thirty-two sieges, but the Porta d ' Agrate is all that remains of its original walls and fortifications.

The remains of most of these fortifications can still be seen.

Archaeological excavations in the 1950s and 1960s uncovered remains from many periods, in particular, a complex of Crusader fortifications and a Roman theatre.

The Eure River, which at this point divides into three branches, is crossed by several bridges, some of them ancient, and is fringed in places by remains of the old fortifications, of which the Porte Guillaume ( 14th century ), a gateway flanked by towers, is the most complete specimen.

No traces of Doué's medieval fortifications remains, save the names of " gates " given to certain streets.

The remains of Civil War field fortifications can be observed along U. S. 21 and 17A between Yemassee and Pocotaligo ( that section of highway is now a part of Yemassee, as the town has now greatly expanded into Beaufort County of 2006 ).

Modelled on Italian trading cities, and built during the Baroque period by the architect Bernardo Morando, a native of Padua, Zamość remains a perfect example of a Renaissance town of the late 16th century, which retains its original layout and fortifications ( Zamość Fortress ), and a large number of buildings blending Italian and central European architectural traditions.

Along the embankment between Leasowe and Moreton are the remains of fortifications built during the Second World War.

There are also remains of medieval fortifications.

* Remains of the town fortifications: the Leipzig Tower ( Leipziger Turm ) ( 15th century ) in the east and remains of the town wall in the south of the city centre.

Considerable remains of the town's 13th-and 14th-century fortifications are still preserved, for instance a fortress tower known as the Schneiderturm (" Tailor's Tower ") or Säuturm (" Sow's Tower "), the Kalsmuntpforte (" Kalsmunt Gate " – see History ) which was the town gate for the earlier suburb of Silhofen, as well as large sections of the town wall.

Remains of the US bomber base and Atom Bomb Pits, and the remains of Japanese fortifications, can be found at North Field.

# Natural curiosities, interesting fossils, petrifactions, organic remains, also all ancient works of art, such as mounds, fortifications, embankments, ditches, or objects of like nature.

The site on which Lexden now stands was crossed by the fortifications of iron age Colchester, the remains of the earthen ramparts can be seen at Bluebottle Grove, Lexden Park and alongside Straight Road.

Signs of this time include concrete bunkers, other fortifications and the remains of an airbase.

Other notable buildings include Swedish mansions of the 17th century, a Baroque town hall ( 1668 – 71 ), and remains of Erik Dahlberg's fortifications.

* Most Roman remains were used in the construction of the fortifications, but two squares are embellished with lofty marble columns ; a Roman tower stands on the eastern side of the town ; and some remains of a Roman aqueduct may be seen outside the ramparts.
