On 15 December 1990, the Supreme Soviet voted to change the republic's name to the Republic of Kyrgyzstan.

The republic's Supreme Soviet transformed into an authentic regional lawmaking body.

Stanislau Shushkevich, the first head of state of independent BelarusThe March 4, 1990, elections to the republic's Supreme Soviet gave the country a legislature that was little different from previous legislatures: only 10 percent of the deputies were members of the opposition.

In view of the fact that in May 1992 the Central Referendum Commission had validated 384, 000 of the 442, 000 signatures collected ( exceeding the 350, 000 signatures required by law ), the BPF opposition accused the Supreme Soviet's conservative majority of an open violation of the republic's constitution and of an attempt to retain power by illegal means.

In addition, parliament also had to authority to elect the republic's executive branch, the Council of Ministers as well as the power to appoint judges to the Supreme Court.

Two days later, on October 27, the Supreme Soviet selected Akayev-who was effectively a compromise candidate-to serve as the republic's first president.

On 20 July 2004, Varshalomidze was approved by the Supreme Council of Adjara as the chairman of the republic's government.

From April to December 1990 he served as a chairman of the republic's Supreme Soviet.

The outlawing of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan ( CPK ), which followed the attempted coup, also permitted Nazarbayev to take virtually complete control of the republic's economy, more than 90 % of which had been under the partial or complete direction of the central Soviet government until late 1991.

In February 1989, opposition to Soviet nuclear testing and its ill effects in Kazakhstan led to the creation of one of the republic's largest and most influential grass-roots movements, Nevada-Semipalatinsk, which was founded by Kazak poet and public figure Olzhas Suleymenov.

The Communist Party of Belarus ( CPB ), part of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union ( CPSU ), claimed to rule the Belarusian SSR in the name of the proletariat for the entire duration of the republic's existence.

Although Soviet sources describe this struggle as a minor chapter in the republic's history, it is clear that opposition was fierce and resulted in the death of large numbers of Turkmen.

Yuri Andropov served for some years as the first secretary of the republic's Komsomol branch, the Leninist Communist Youth League of the Karelo-Finnish Soviet Socialist Republic.

Throughout its 72-year history, the republic's borders changed many times, with a significant portion of what is now Western Ukraine being annexed by Soviet forces in 1939 and the addition of formerly Russian Crimea in 1954.

With the Soviet Census of 1989, the republic's population consisted of 51, 706, 746 inhabitants, although the population would fall sharply after the breakup of the Soviet Union.

The latter aspect of the 1944 clauses, however, was never fulfilled and the republic's defense matters were managed by the Soviet Armed Forces and the Defense Ministry.

The most common administrative division was the oblast ( province ), of which there were 25 upon the republic's independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.

Accordingly, the eastern city of Kharkiv was chosen as the republic's seat of government, colloquially named in the media as " the first capital " with implication to the era of Soviet regime.

This was one of the first decisions made by the republic's parliament after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

In November 1988 in Tbilisi, capital of Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic, large numbers of demonstrators camped out in front of the republic's legislature in support of Estonia's declaration of sovereignty.

It was attached to Tajik SSR ( Soviet Socialist Republic ) after the republic's creation in 1929.

* On 20 January 1991, the Soviet Riga OMON attacked Latvia's Interior Ministry, killing six people during the January 1991 events following the republic's declaration of independence.

Similar emblems were used by the Autonomous Socialist Soviet Republics ( ASSR ) within the Russian SFSR ; the main differences were generally the use of the republic's acronym and the presence of the motto in the language ( s ) of the titular nations ( with the exception of the state emblem of the Dagestan ASSR, which had the motto in eleven languages as there is no single Dagestani language ).

Population density figures conceal a great disparity between the republic's most crowded island, Nzwani, which had a density of 470 persons per square kilometer in 1991 ; Ngazidja, which had a density of 250 persons per square kilometer in 1991 ; and Mwali, where the 1991 population density figure was 120 persons per square kilometer.

T ' ang Ching-sung ( 唐景崧 ), the Ch ' ing governor-general of Taiwan, was prevailed upon to become the republic's first President, and his old friend Liu Yung-fu ( 劉永福 ), the retired Black Flag Army commander who had become a national hero in China for his victories against the French in northern Vietnam a decade earlier, was invited to serve as Grand General of the Army.

In 1945, agriculture was only 40 percent of the 1940 level, even though the republic's territorial expansion had " increased the amount of arable land.

The conference had a permanent secretariat, including officials from the republic's Department of Foreign Affairs, based in the Belfast suburb of Maryfield.

" Considering situation in Chechnya, the Moscow Times quoted election officials in the republic's capital, Grozny, as acknowledging that they had filled in several thousand ballots for Putin.

The republic's constitution added no such proviso, and the Portuguese Republican Party was able to keep the other minor republican parties ( monarchic parties had been declared illegal ) from winning elections.

Carlist forces managed to expand the territory under their control to the greatest extent in early 1874, though a series of defeats by the republic's northern army in the second half of the year might have led to the end of the war had it not been for bad weather.

As far as SDP was concerned getting 5 seats was a remarkable success-the party entered parliament for the first time in its history and could now influence the republic's official policy, neither of which they could dream of had they entered the election alone.

The team has enjoyed very little success due to the republic's tiny population, the smallest of any UEFA country.

The rebels killed 67 members of security forces, including the republic's Interior Minister Abukar Kostoyev, his deputy Zyaudin Kotiev, top prosecutors, and other officials ; they also captured and looted the MVD's armory and police depots.
