Dick Vitale, ESPN's most well-known college basketball commentator, was the University of Detroit men's basketball Head Coach for four seasons ( 1973 – 1977 ) before becoming the school's Athletics Director for 1977-78.

* The Arthur B. and Diane Belfer Educational Center for Health Sciences ( 1972 ) is the school's main educational building and houses the 1st year medical students ' lecture hall ( Riklis Auditorium ) along with instructional labs and various conference rooms.

Initially, there were only twenty-four boys, of whom eleven were day boys, six masters and two houses, named Mr McDowall's ( No. 1 ) and Mr Drew's ( No. 2 ), but the new school's expansion was rapid.

* The Visitation: The Visitation is a former convent that now houses the school's classes in art and music.

* The M. Burch Tracy Ford Library, as the newest academic facility on campus is named for the school's eleventh Head of School and houses over 22, 000 volumes, electronic books, magazines, journals, newspapers in addition to a collection of 1, 308 academic and entertainment DVDs and videos.

The Edward Bennett Williams Law Library building ( 1989 ) houses most of the school's library collection and is one of the largest law libraries in the United States.

Many headmasters came and went in the intervening period, including one James Cawthorne ( head from 1743 to 1761 ), a severe disciplinarian, so severe that his ghost is said to have remorselessly haunted the dormitories of the school's various houses for over a century after his death.

Kirkland House, one of Harvard's undergraduate " houses ," or residence halls, was named in his honor and in recognition of his term at the school's helm.
