The original lyrics authored by Wybicki were a poem consisting of six stanzas and a chorus repeated after all but last stanzas, all following an ABAB rhyme scheme.

In traditional English-language poems, stanzas can be identified and grouped together because they share a rhyme scheme or a fixed number of lines ( as in distich / couplet, tercet, quatrain, cinquain / quintain, sestet ).

Less obvious manifestations of stanzaic form can be found as well, as in Shakespeare's sonnets, which, while printed as whole units in themselves, can be broken into stanzas with the same rhyme scheme followed by a final couplet, as in the example of Sonnet 116:

There is no rhyme within the stanzas ; instead the sestina is structured through a recurrent pattern of the words that end each line, a technique known as " lexical repetition ".

After World War II, the American New Criticism returned to the lyric, advocating a poetry that made conventional use of rhyme, meter and stanzas, and was modestly personal in the lyric tradition.

At only a short twelve stanzas, of only four lines each, with a simple ABCB rhyme scheme, the poem is nonetheless full of enigmas, and has been the subject of numerous interpretations.

The ballade is a verse form typically consisting of three eight-line stanzas, each with a consistent metre and a particular rhyme scheme.

The stanzas differ from those of the other odes through use of eleven lines rather than ten, and have a couplet placed before the concluding line of each stanza.

The Norse poets tended to break up their verses into stanzas of from two to eight lines ( or more ), rather than writing continuous verse after the Old English model.

Although Tolkien abandoned them before their respective ends, they are both long enough to occupy many stanzas, each of which can last for over ten pages.

The two stanzas have to rhyme on their last line.

The last part of the poem is devoted to his father and talks about the life of fame and the possibility of continuing to live in the memories of the living, when one is great and has accomplished great deeds while living ( stanzas 25-32 ).
