It was adapted and modified throughout the Middle Ages, including an influential Latin prose version Historia Caroli Magni ( also known as the Pseudo-Turpin Chronicle ), which also includes Roland's battle with a Saracen giant named Ferracutus who is only vulnerable at his navel ( the story was later adapted in the anonymous Franco-Venetian epic L ' Entrée d ' Espagne ( c. 1320 ) and in the 14th century Italian epic La Spagna ( attributed to the Florentine Sostegno di Zanobi and likely composed between 1350 – 1360 ).

His novels include: Shike, set in medieval Japan ; All Things Are Lights, a story that entwines the fate of Cathars of southern France with the occult traditions of Courtly Love and the troubadours ; The Saracen, describing the intricate politics of medieval Italy through the eyes of an Islamic warrior ; Shaman, tracing the fate of the survivors of the Black Hawk War in 19th century Illinois ; Lady Yang, a tragic story of an idealistic empress of medieval China.

The evidence for the Persian origin of Tristan and Iseult is very circumstantial and different theories have been suggested how this Persian story reached the West, some suggesting story-telling exchanges during the crusades in Syrian court and through minstrels who had free access to both Crusader and Saracen camps in the Holy Land.
