Three subspecies are known: the Western Hermann's tortoise ( T. h. hermanni ), the Eastern Hermann's tortoise ( T. h. boettgeri ) and Dalmatian tortoise ( T. h. hercegovinensis ).

* G. tibicen terraereginae, found from Cape York and the Gulf Country southwards across Queensland to the coast between Halifax Bay in the north and south to the Mary River, and central and western New South Wales and into northern South Australia, is a small to medium-sized subspecies.

The winter habitat of both subspecies is grassland and marshland, often near the coast ; they like to visit fields after harvest to feed on discarded grains and while on migration may stop over on mountain lakes.

It is the most abundant and wide-ranging ice seal in the northern hemisphere: ranging throughout the Arctic Ocean, into the Bering Sea and Okhotsk Sea as far south as the northern coast of Japan in the Pacific, and throughout the North Atlantic coasts of Greenland and Scandinavia as far south as Newfoundland, and include two freshwater subspecies in northern Europe.

Birds of the nominate subspecies ( no matter which taxonomic arrangement is preferred ) are extremely rare vagrants to western Europe ; individuals from the Pacific coast of North America may similarly stray as far as Hawaii.

Recent evidence suggests that birds on the Atlantic coast of southwest Europe are distinct from all three, and may be an as-yet undescribed subspecies ( Yésou et al., Brit.

Their distribution in Southwest Australia is represented by two subspecies of Rankinia adelaidensis ; one at the western coast, another along the southeast coast of the region.

Two subspecies are recognised: the nominate race pacificus from the east coast, and georgii from South Australia and Western Australia.

The Common Pheasant ( P. colchicus ) has about thirty recognised subspecies forming 5 or 6 distinct groups ; one is only found on the island of Taiwan off the southern coast of continental China, and the rest on the Asian mainland, reaching west to the Caucasus.

The coastal taipan has two subspecies: the coastal taipan ( O. s. scutellatus ), found along the northeastern coast of Queensland, and the Papuan taipan ( O. s. canni ), found on the southern coast of Papua New Guinea.

Two forms of black-tailed deer or blacktail deer occupying coastal temperate rainforest on North America's Pacific coast are subspecies of the mule deer.

Recognized subspecies include: Taxidea taxus jacksoni, found in the western Great Lakes region ; T. t. jeffersoni, on the west coast of Canada and the US ; and T. t. berlandieri, in the southwestern US and northern Mexico .< ref name = r18 >

The kermodei subspecies ranges from Princess Royal Island to Prince Rupert, British Columbia on the coast, and inland toward Hazelton, British Columbia.

However, some local populations are classified as Endangered, and some subspecies are endangered or extinct.

Therefore, any population that is somewhat biologically different could be considered a subspecies, even to the level of a local population.

Fossils found in Japan indicate that the local tigers were, like the surviving island subspecies, smaller than the mainland forms.

On Madeira and the Azores, the local population has been described as E. r. microrhynchos, and although not distinct in morphology, its isolation seems to suggests the subspecies is valid ( but see below ).

There are many subspecies that have adapted to the local geographic and climatic environment, and in addition, hybrid strains such as the Buckfast bee have been bred.

Now, it is illegal in Florida to sell any wild type red-eared slider, as they interbreed with the local yellow-bellied slider population – Trachemys scripta scripta is another subspecies of pond sliders, and intergrades typically combine the markings of the two subspecies.

A special note on the local wildlife is the local subspecies of rattlesnake, the Mojave rattlesnake ( also called the Mojave green rattlesnake ).

Other populations ( e. g., in Europe ) have a shorter migration, and some, for example the subspecies R. t. pearsoni and R. t. platyrhynchus ( both restricted to islands ), are residents that only make local movements.

The choice of location sparked considerable local controversy, both from the San Carlos Apache Tribe, who claimed the mountain is sacred, and from environmentalists who contended that the observatory would cause the demise of an endangered subspecies of the American Red Squirrel, the Mount Graham Red Squirrel.

In India, the subspecies govinda shows large seasonal fluctuations with the highest numbers seen from July to October, after the Monsoons, and it has been suggested that they make local movements in response to high rainfall.

With improved game laws and habitat recreation and preservation programs, their populations have recovered in most of their range, although some local populations, especially of the subspecies occidentalis, may still be declining.

Many of the species are quite local in their ranges, and some have even more local subspecies.

This is larger and longer winged than the nominate subspecies found in the southern peninsular region and Sri Lanka is said to be a local migrant.

The subspecies of P. acnes that cause these infections of otherwise sterile tissues ( prior to medical procedures ), however, are the same subspecies found on the skin of individuals who do not have acne-prone skin, so are likely local contaminants.
