Jetsunma Ahkon Lhamo is an enthroned tulku within the Palyul lineage of the Nyingma tradition recognized by Penor Rinpoche.

The 14th Shamarpa, who is the second longest recognized tulku ( reincarnate Lama ) incarnation lineage in the Karma Kagyu tradition and who, in previous incarnations, has held and transmitted the Kagyu lineage between Karmapas, does not recognize Ogyen Trinley Dorje and instead has proclaimed Thaye Dorje (), whom he purportedly identified a few years earlier ( than the recognition of Orgyen Thrinley Dorje ) in a dream, as the true Karmapa.

Jamgön Kongtrül, also Jamgoin Gongzhü in official transcription, is a name of a prominent line of Tibetan Buddhist teachers ( lama ), primarily identified with the first Jamgon Kongtrul, but also the name shared by members of a lineage held by tradition to be his subsequent reincarnations ( tulku ), to date.

The monastery is the traditional seat of successive Panchen Lamas, the second highest ranking tulku lineage in the Gelukpa tradition.

The search for the Dalai Lama has usually been limited historically to Tibet, although the third tulku was born in Mongolia.

* February 22 – In Tibet, province of Ando, 4-year-old Tenzin Gyatso is proclaimed the tulku ( rebirth ) of the thirteenth Dalai Lama.

Tibetan Buddhism use the tulku system, an ancient way of finding the reincarnation of a previous deceased lama: they are usually young boys, sometimes of wealthy and influential families and sometimes of peasant families like the current 14th Dalai Lama, that are found and enthroned as the reincarnation of an enlightened person that has already deceased.

The title " Dalai Lama " itself was bestowed upon the third lama of the Gelug tulku lineage by Altan Khan ( not to be confused with the Altan Khans of the Khalkha ), and means, in Mongolian, " Ocean of Wisdom.

In Tibetan Buddhism, a tulku (, also tülku, trulku ) is a particular high-ranking lama ( e. g., the Dalai Lama, the Panchen Lama, the Karmapa ) who can choose the manner of his ( or her ) rebirth.

By far the most politically powerful tulku lineage for the past several hundred years have been the Dalai Lamas, which has seen a total of fourteen emanations beginning with Gedun Drub.

The Karmapa lineage is the most ancient tulku lineage in Tibetan Buddhism, predating the Dalai Lama lineage by more than two centuries.

Led by the Dalai Lama, the abbots of three great monasteries, lamas, reincarnated monks or tulku, government officials and dignitaries join the ceremony and offer their contemplative prayers, while the monks of Namgyal Monastery recite the invocation of Palden Lhamo.

He has been recognized by Tibetan Lama Penor Rinpoche as the reincarnation of tulku Chungdrag Dorje, the treasure revealer of Palyul Monastery.

After spending his childhood and youth in Nepal receiving a traditional education for a Gelugpa tulku, Lama Osel subsequently chose to attend a western secondary boarding school in Canada and is currently attending university in Spain.

In 1986, a Spanish boy named Osel Hita Torres ( a. k. a. Tenzin Ösel Rinpoche, or " Lama Ösel ") was identified as the tulku of Lama Yeshe.

Hita's parents, María Torres and Francisco Hita, had been students of Lama Yeshe, and the suggestion was raised soon after his birth that Hita might be Yeshe's tulku ( reincarnation ).

Each tulku has a distinct lineage of rebirths.

Perhaps the most religiously significant such tulku is Tenzin Ösel ( born 1985 ), the child of Spanish parents, who has been recognized as the reincarnation of Thubten Yeshe, an influential Tibetan lama.

Usually the tulku heir has been male, that is, appeared in male form.

Penor Rinpoche notes that " such recognition does not mean that one is already a realized teacher "; Seagal has not been enthroned and has not undergone the extensive program of training and study that is customary for a tulku.

Ogyen Trinley Dorje was installed at Tsurphu Monastery (), the traditional seat of the Karmapa in Tibet, with the official sanction of the Central People's Government who declared him to be a " living Buddha ", the first time a communist Chinese government has recognised a tulku.

The Tibetan institution of the tulku as the emanation ( often misunderstood as the rebirth ) of a lama developed during the 12th, 13th, and 14th centuries, as various Schools of Tibetan Buddhism began to accept the possibility that exemplary figures might remain within the human world as institutional teachers, manifesting from one lifetime to the next out of compassion.

Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, recognizes the Bon tradition as the sixth principal spiritual school of Tibet, along with the Nyingma, Sakya, Kagyu, Gelug and Jonang schools of Buddhism, despite the long historical competition between the Bon tradition and Buddhism in Tibet.

( While the Dalai Lama has authorized followers of the Tibetan tradition to be ordained as nuns the issue remains theoretical as the female order has never been introduced in Tibet.

The 10th Panchen Lama himself declared, as cited by an official Chinese review that " according to Tibetan tradition, the confirmation of either the Dalai or Panchen must be mutually recognized.

China claims however, that their involvement does not break with tradition in that the final decision about the recognition of both the Dalai Lama and the Panchen Lama traditionally rested in the hands of the Chinese emperor.

This has been the tradition since the Fifth Dalai Lama, Ngawang Lobsang, recognized his teacher Lobsang Choekyi Gyaltsen as the Panchen ( Great Scholar ) Lama of Tashilhunpo Monastery ( Bkra-shis Lhung-po ) in Shigatse ( Gzhis-ka rtse ).

In Tibet there is currently no bhikkhuni ordination, but the Dalai Lama has authorized followers of the Tibetan tradition to be ordained as nuns in traditions that have such ordination.

There were many other influences and much cross-fertilization between the different traditions, and indeed His Holiness the Dalai Lama has asserted that it is acceptable for those initiated in one Kalachakra tradition to practice in others.

The 14th Dalai Lama assigned Khalkha Jetsun Dampa Rinpoche or the ' Bogd Gegeen ' of Mongolia ( who is considered to be an incarnation of Taranatha ) as the leader of the Jonang tradition.

" In explaining this, Geshe Kelsang said that if the Dalai Lama succeeds in destroying the practice of Dorje Shugden, the entire Gelug tradition itself will be destroyed:

It has been pointed out that according to tradition the Dalai Lama does not have any role in the recognition process of the Karmapa or within the Karma Kagyu school in general.

Later on His Holiness the Dalai Lama would regard Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche as his principal teacher in the Nyingma tradition and of Dzogchen.

Some twenty years later, the Dalai Lama got involved in a " bitter dispute " with his teacher by stating that the practice is in conflict with the state protector Pehar and with the main protective goddess of the Gelug tradition and the Tibetan people, Palden Lhamo.

Otherwise, according to Tantric tradition he might be regarded as a person who has broken the Tantric vow ( dam-nyams ) and this would concern the Dalai Lama himself as having been initiated by Shugden practice.

" Instead, he traces back the conflict more on the exclusive / inclusive approach and maintain that to understand the Dalai Lama's point of view one has to consider the complex ritual basis for the institution of the Dalai Lamas, which was developed by the Great Fifth and rests upon " an eclectic religious basis in which elements associated with the Nyingma tradition combine with an overall Gelug orientation.

Rather, it is between two traditional or clan-based interpretations of the Geluk tradition, that of Shukden's followers who want to set the Geluk tradition apart from others, and the Dalai Lama's more eclectic vision.

When the Dalai Lama visited England later in the summer of 1996, members of the New Kadampa tradition staged pickets outside venues where the Dalai Lama was speaking, holding placards accusing the Dalai Lama of repressing religious freedom.

" Michael von Brück denies the historical evidence of such a claim, stating " The problem is that this position has no historical evidence, neither in the biography of the 5th Dalai Lama or elsewhere ," adding that for this reason the authenticity of the oral tradition cannot be decided.

This recognition was confirmed by the 14th Dalai Lama, Sakya Trizin, the head of the Sakya sect, and Mindroling Trichen, the recently deceased head of the Nyingma tradition.
