Mayor McKibben came under fire for her recent decision to discharge the village's chief of police.

In 1892 a fire devastated the eastern side of the business district, stymieing the village's growth and causing some business owners to close up shop forever.

The Kenmore Village Improvement Society led the resistance to this, citing the village's police and fire response times and its fiscal responsibility as reasons to keep it a separate entity.

The theater served as the village's fire department at one point.

Most of the village's public services are provided by contract with Grandview Heights, including police and fire, and it is included in the Grandview Heights School District and public library system.

The village's main shopping centre is the Richmond Plaza, which houses a limited selection of shops and services including a LCBO, bank, drugstore, grocer, and several restaurants.

There are also frequent bus services to the surrounding Lancashire, North Yorkshire & Greater Manchester towns and cities including Accrington, Blackburn, Burnley, Bolton, Clitheroe, Darwen, Longridge, Skipton and Manchester from the village's central street and Whalley Bus Station.

The village's newspaper ; " GPN " ( Gnosall Parish News ), is produced and sold in the village, and serves as a local advertiser of services and events, as well as publishing articles of interest to the local community.

The Foliot part of the village's name derives from the Foliot family, John Foliot being a half-brother of William the Conqueror and recipient of large amounts of land for services rendered during the Norman conquest.

Most of them have a church and a " Casa do Povo " ( people's house ), where the village's summer romarias or religious festivities are usually held.

Slane Wanderers is the village's local football club, whose home games are played in Wheatfield Park.

The village's grocery and fuel needs are served by a single general store, owned and operated by the local Alaska Native Corporation, Nunapitchuk, Limited.

Most Quinhagak households practice subsistence hunting and gathering in addition to any wage work they are able to find, utilizing the village's excellent location for salmon and trout fishing, bird, caribou, and moose hunting, and berry picking.

Smaller neighborhood centers and stand-alone retail buildings are located further north, in addition to the larger community retail plaza Huntley Center, the village's first shopping center.

* The village is also located along a branch of the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad, and thus many of the village's industries are near the railroad for convenient access to Elgin, Rockford, Chicago, and essentially the rest of the world.

There are only a handful of businesses in the village's 16 blocks.

The three main ethnic backgrounds are Italian, Irish and German, comprising over three-fourths of the village's population.

Today the railroads are gone but the village's proximity to Interstate 84, the New York State Thruway and Stewart International Airport ensure its continued status as a transportation and distribution center.

However, almost all the Bay Street marina complex, including Sag Harbor Yacht Club and Breakwater Yacht Club, are at the foot of Main Street is in East Hampton as are the village's high school, the Sag Harbor State Golf Course, and the freed slave community of Eastville.

The village's post office building, the George and John R. Hunt Memorial Building and the former D & H Canal are listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

The village's public schools are run by the Elmsford Board of Education and include Dixon Primary, Alice E. Grady Elementary and Alexander Hamilton Junior / Senior High School.

Still in existence today are the Odd Fellows ' Cemetery Mound and the Perin Village Site, plus the Turpin Site and the Hahn Field Archeological District just outside of the village's boundaries.

Locals are particular on how to pronounce the village's name.

There are conflicting versions of the origin of the village's name.

Past the village's new residential housing which has recently transformed and breathed new life into the village, are plenty of preserved working farms, and one of these farms supplies the ice-cream for the award-winning Goodall's Ice Cream Parlour, owned by Mark and Stephen Goodall of Manor Lane, Tong.

There are two stories which explain the origin of the village's name.

For the " Dibley Live " ( 1998 ) episode of The Vicar of Dibley, in which the characters are generating programming ideas for the village's one-week radio station, the chronically dull Frank originally proposes a programme called Desert Island Desks, in which he would recount his favourites from the many desks at which he has sat during his lifetime.

Today the village's Shaker Cemetery is maintained by the township trustees and is open to the public ; while most of the settlement's buildings remain along Oxford Road, they are all privately owned.

Many of the village's historic buildings are encompassed by the Albany Street Historic District and Cazenovia Village Historic District.
