Along the way, the duo encounter several new locals, including an old musician named Cornelius Mazurka and his companion Therizinosaurus Henriette in the ruins of an old city, a town called Bilgewater made completely out of salvaged ships that the inhabitants believe will carry them into another world, and Jorotongo, a consistently festive and completely nomadic village composed of pilgrims from the Sunflower, sister ship to the Mayflower.

Therizinosaurs spanned a large range of sizes, from the small Beipiaosaurus ( which measured 2. 2 m, or 7. 3 ft in length ), to the gigantic Therizinosaurus, which at an approximate 10 – 12 m ( 33 – 40 ft ) long and an estimated weight of 6. 2 tonnes, was among the largest known theropods.

Though the arms of Deinocheirus have a considerable absolute size, being the longest of any known theropod with the exception of Therizinosaurus, they are not very long relative to the shoulder girdle, the ratio being less than that with most ornithomimosaurs.

These were common among therizinosaurs but especially large in Therizinosaurus, and while the largest claw specimens are incomplete, they probably reached just under 1 metre ( 3. 28 ft ) in length.

Various theories had been proposed to explain the ancestry of the " segnosaurids ," with some scientists suggesting they were descendants of the sauropodomorphs or even that they were neither saurischians nor ornithischians-but new, well-preserved finds such as Alxasaurus in 1993 and Beipiaosaurus in 1996 provided details about the bird-like pelvis, feet and skulls of primitive members, and helped confirm that segnosaurids belonged to the same group of theropod dinosaurs as Therizinosaurus ( and were therefore renamed therizinosaurids ), and that therizinosaurs were, more specifically, advanced, herbivorous maniraptoran theropods.

It was not until the mid-1990s, after Alxasaurus was discovered and shown to possess more typically theropod features, and Therizinosaurus was recognized as a member of the segnosaur group, that their true identity as herbivorous descendants of the carnivorous theropods became generally accepted.

The superfamily Therizinosauroidea had been established by Maleev in 1954, to include only the bizarre, giant-clawed theropod Therizinosaurus.

The dinosaurs featured were Edmontosaurus, Baryonyx, Styracosaurus, Troodon, Dilophosaurus ( returning and also having a juvenile ), Therizinosaurus, Allosaurus, Quetzalcoatlus ( not a dinosaur ), Sarcosuchus ( not a dinosaur ), Cryolophosaurus, Rugops, Kentrosaurus, Deltadromeus, Giganotosaurus, Brachiosaurus ( returning but in a new spot ), Carnotaurus, and Amargasaurus.

Because early finds were incomplete, the strange suite of anatomical features combing features typical of theropods, prosauropods and ornithischians led some scientists, such as Gregory S. Paul, to conclude that segnosaurs ( as they were called before Therizinosaurus was recognized as part of the group ) represented a late-surviving suborder of primitive dinosaurs, sometimes thought of as intermediates between prosauropods and ornithischians.

At that point it also became clear that Therizinosaurus was a close relative and the group therefore actually was called the Therizinosauridae, a name having priority, and that these forms were plant-eaters instead of fish-eaters as had originally been presumed by Perle.

Therizinosaurus comprises the single species T. cheloniformis, which lived in the late Cretaceous Period ( late Campanian-early Maastrichtian stages, around 70 million years ago ), and was one of the last and largest representatives of its unique group, the Therizinosauria.

Though the fossil remains of Therizinosaurus are incomplete, inferences can be made about their physical characteristics based on related therizinosaurids.

Gregory S. Paul in 2010 estimated the maximum size of Therizinosaurus at ten metres in length and five tonnes in weight.

The most distinctive feature of Therizinosaurus was the presence of gigantic claws on each of the three digits of their frontlimbs.

The feeding habits of Therizinosaurus are unknown, since no skull material has ever been found that could indicate their diet.

The first fossil remains of Therizinosaurus were discovered in 1948 by a joint Soviet-Mongolian fossil expedition, in the Nemegt Formation of southwestern Mongolia.

The discovery that these enigmatic segnosaurs ( including Erlikosaurus and Segnosaurus ) were actually theropods helped clarify the relationships of Therizinosaurus.

Therizinosaurus was in 1954 by Maleev assigned to the Therizinosauridae, seen by him as a unique Central-Asian family of sea-turtles, the largest known.

Even more drastically, the segnosaurs, once not even regarded as theropods, have turned out to be non-carnivorous coelurosaurs related to Therizinosaurus.

Among the most striking characteristics of therizinosaurs are the enormous claws on their hands, which reached lengths of three feet in Therizinosaurus.
