Palamedes, Creugas and Damoxenus, the Combat of Theseus and the Centaur, and Hercules and Lichas may close the class of heroic compositions, although the catalogue might be swelled by the enumeration of various others, such as Hector and Ajax, King Ferdinand of Naples, and others.

In Greek mythology, Mount Pelion ( which took its name from the mythical king Peleus, father of Achilles ) was the homeland of Chiron the Centaur, tutor of many ancient Greek heroes, such as Jason, Achilles, Theseus and Heracles.

Thenceforward Barye, though engaged in a perpetual struggle with want, exhibited year after year studies of animals — admirable groups which reveal him as inspired by a spirit of true romance, as in his Roger and Angelica on the Hippogriff ( 1840 ), drawn from an episode in Orlando furioso, and a feeling for the beauty of the antique, as in Theseus and the Minotaur ( 1847 ), " Lapitha and Centaur " ( 1848 ), and numerous minor works now very highly valued.

Author Suzanne Collins was inspired by Theseus to write The Hunger Games trilogy, which was published from 2008 – 2010.

According to ancient sources, ( Plutarch Theseus, Pausanias ), Amazon tombs could be found frequently throughout what was once known as the ancient Greek world.

According to the Roman poet Ovid ( Fasti v. 379 ), the constellation honors the centaur Chiron, who was tutor to many of the earlier Greek heroes including Heracles ( Hercules ), Theseus, and Jason, the leader of the Argonauts.

When Heracles had pulled Theseus first from his chair, some of his thigh stuck to it ( this explains the supposedly lean thighs of Athenians ), but the earth shook at the attempt to liberate Pirithous, whose desire to have the wife of a god for himself was so insulting he was doomed to stay behind.

But eventually Ariadne, unable to bear her separation from Theseus, either killed herself ( according to the Athenians ), or ascended to heaven ( as the older versions had it ).

The site was sacred to Athena, the goddess of wisdom, and other immortals ; it had sheltered her religious cult since the Bronze Age, which was perhaps associated with the hero-gods, the Dioskouroi ( Castor and Polydeukes ), for the hero Akademos associated with the site was credited with revealing to the Divine Twins where Theseus had hidden Helen of Troy.

Ariadne ( Etruscan Areatha ) is paired with Dionysus ( Etruscan Fufluns ) on engraved bronze Etruscan bronze mirrorbacks, where the Athenian culture-hero Theseus is absent, and Semele ( Etruscan Semla ), as mother of Dionysus, may accompany the pair, lending a particularly Etruscan air of family authority.

The friendship of Theseus and Pirithous acquired homoerotic undertone in Attic comedy, for which Heracles attempted to free them from the rock to which they had been bound together in the Underworld ( for having tried to carry off Persephone ), he succeeded in freeing only Theseus, and left behind his buttocks attached to the rocks-from which Theseus came to be called hypolispos, meaning " with hinder parts rubbed smooth.

This scenario is also occasionally embellished with the theme of double paternity: the hero's mother lying with king and god in the same night ( the mother of Theseus, for example ) or to be visited secretly by the god ( like Danaë, mother of Perseus ), and the seed of the two fathers is mixed in her womb.

Achaeus of Eretria (; born 484 BC in Euboea ) was a Greek playwright author of tragedies and satyr plays, variously said to have written 24, 30, or 44 plays, of which 19 titles are known: Adrastus, Aethon, Alcmeon, Alphesiboea, Athla, Azanes, Cycnus, Hephaestus, Iris, Linus, Eumenides, Moirai ( Fates ), Momus, Œdipus, Omphale, Philoctetes, Phrixus, Pirithous, and Theseus.

The next year, Morrissey appeared as Theseus in an episode of The Storyteller directed by Madden (" Theseus and the Minotaur ", 1991 ), and as Little John in Robin Hood ( John Irvin, 1991 ).

Napolean ordered it for the Corso in Milan ; Emperor Franz I bought it for the Theseus Temple in the Volksgarten in Vienna ; moved to Kunsthistorisches Museum in 1891.

It was said to have been named after the Greek town of Aegae, or after Aegea, a queen of the Amazons who died in the sea, or Aigaion, the " sea goat ", another name of Briareus, one of the archaic Hecatonchires, or, especially among the Athenians, Aegeus, the father of Theseus, who drowned himself in the sea when he thought his son had died.

According to a version of the Ariadne legend noted by Plutarch, Theseus abandoned Ariadne at Amathousa, where she died giving birth to her child and was buried in a sacred tomb.

He was accompanied by his friend Theseus, who carried off the princess Antiope, sister of Hippolyta, an incident which led to a retaliatory invasion of Attica, in which Antiope perished fighting by the side of Theseus.

In some versions, however, Theseus marries Hippolyta and in others, he marries Antiope and she does not die ; by this marriage with the Amazon Theseus had a son Hippolytus.

The victorious Theseus is represented as seated on the lifeless body of the monster.

The Theseus was regarded with fervent admiration.

The " goat-man " who gave his name to the Aegean Sea was, next to Poseidon, the father of Theseus, the founder of Athenian institutions and one of the kings of Athens.

She tried to poison him, but at the last second, Aegeus recognized his sword and knocked the poisoned cup out of Theseus ' hand.

Theseus departed for Crete.

However, when Theseus returned, he forgot these instructions.
