Vickers and name
The most famous story, first published in a collection called Break of Dark, is titled Blackham's Wimpy, the name of a Vickers Wellington Bomber featured in the story, whose nickname comes from the character J. Wellington Wimpy from the Popeye comics and cartoons ( the Wellington was named for Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, victor over Napoleon ).
In 1928 Vickers-Armstrongs took over Supermarine as Supermarine Aviation Works ( Vickers ) Ltd and in 1938 all Vickers-Armstrongs aviation interests were reorganised to become Vickers-Armstrongs ( Aircraft ) Ltd, although Supermarine continued to design, build and trade under its own name.
Vickers was a famous name in British engineering that existed through many companies from 1828 until 1999.
