The most famous story, first published in a collection called Break of Dark, is titled Blackham's Wimpy, the name of a Vickers Wellington Bomber featured in the story, whose nickname comes from the character J. Wellington Wimpy from the Popeye comics and cartoons ( the Wellington was named for Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, victor over Napoleon ).

In 1928 Vickers-Armstrongs took over Supermarine as Supermarine Aviation Works ( Vickers ) Ltd and in 1938 all Vickers-Armstrongs aviation interests were reorganised to become Vickers-Armstrongs ( Aircraft ) Ltd, although Supermarine continued to design, build and trade under its own name.

Vickers was a famous name in British engineering that existed through many companies from 1828 until 1999.

In 1911 the company name was changed to Vickers Ltd and expanded its operations into aircraft manufacture by the formation of Vickers Ltd ( Aviation Department ) and a Vickers School of Flying was opened at Brooklands, Surrey on 20 January 1912.

The Supermarine operation was closed in 1963 and the Vickers name for aircraft was dropped in 1965.

The town of Sacramento was originally named Cross Roads, but after returning from the California Gold Rush ( presumably having spent time in Sacramento, CA ), John Vickers suggested changing the name to Sacramento.

The sugar works closed some years ago ( parts of the factory remain, including the warehouse ) Simon Vickers remains ( trading under a different name ) but employing a fraction of the workforce of times gone by.

Postwar the airline used the name Misrair and Beech C-45's were supplemented in 1948 by the larger Vickers VC. 1 Viking which was operated until 1961.

In 1955 the name of the shipbuilding division changed to Vickers Armstrongs Shipbuilders, Ltd and changed again in 1968 to Vickers Limited Shipbuilding Group.

In 1947, BWIA was taken over by British South American Airways ( BSAA ), after a few months operating as British International Air Lines the ' BWIA ' name was restored on 24 June 1948 for operating routes among the Caribbean Islands using Vickers Viking twin-piston types.

The Vickers machine gun or Vickers gun is a name primarily used to refer to the water-cooled. 303 British ( 7. 7 mm ) machine gun produced by Vickers Limited, originally for the British Army.

It is often incorrectly labelled with the title " Offside ", which was actually the name of an alternative commercially-released version in 1970, which was conducted by Mike Vickers.

A Vickers Viscount, ZK-BRF ( name ' City of Christchurch ') is preserved at Ferrymead in Christchurch.

This left two aircraft companies with Armstrong in the name Vickers-Armstrongs ( known usually as just " Vickers ") and " Armstrong-Whitworth "

When Williams bought the £ 8. 5 million mansion in early 2009, Vickers lived at the estate for some months but had recently moved back in with his mother who lives nearby.

Vickers of England naturally suspended royalty payments during the war ( Krupp held the patent on shell fuses, but back-payment was made in 1926 ).

In 1927, Vickers merged with the Tyneside based engineering company Armstrong Whitworth, founded by W. G. Armstrong, to become Vickers-Armstrongs, Ltd. Armstrong Whitworth had developed along similar lines to Vickers, expanding into various military sectors and was notable for their artillery manufacture at Elswick and shipbuilding at a yard at High Walker on the River Tyne.

Armstrongs shipbuilding interests became the " Naval Yard ", those of Vickers on the west coast the " Naval Construction Yard ".

BAE Systems announced on 31 May 2012 that the ex Vickers Defence Systems factory on Scotswood Road, Newcastle would close at the end of 2013.

Rhodesian counterinsurgency operation extended into Zambia after ZIPRA rebels shot down two unarmed Vickers Viscount civilian airliners ( Air Rhodesia Flight 825 on 3 September 1978 and Air Rhodesia Flight 827 on 12 February 1979 ) with Soviet supplied SAM-7 heat-seeking missiles.

The machine's Sinclair BASIC interpreter is stored in ROM ( along with fundamental system-routines ) and was written by Steve Vickers on contract from Nine Tiles Ltd.

In 1998 the armoured vehicle business was sold to Alvis plc, and subsequently incorporated into Alvis Vickers Ltd.

Rolls-Royce sold Vickers Defence Systems ( the other major Vickers area of business ) to Alvis plc in 2002 which then became Alvis Vickers, then the largest armoured vehicle company in the UK.

The military vehicle manufacturing interests were divested into Vickers plc, and would later pass to Alvis Vickers, now part of BAE Systems Land and Armaments.

The incorporation of Alvis Vickers into BAE Systems meant that elements of the work moved to BAE Land Systems, Sweden, formerly known as " Hägglunds ", another ex-Alvis company.

When Alvis purchased Vickers Defence Systems to become Alvis Vickers, Vickers OMC became Alvis OMC.
