In Ben Jonson's play Volpone ( 1606 ) one of the characters uses the expression " Marry Gip ".

The 1605 edition states that the version performed on stage combined Jonson's writing with that of " a second pen ," and Jonson had revised the play to remove the collaborator's contribution.

Ben Jonson's play The Alchemist bears many similarities to Chaucer's tale.

When the play was reprinted in Jonson's folio collection of 1616, a cast list of the original 1599 production was included.

( Note: the order of these first two events has been questioned by James Bednarz, who argues that "( a ) Histriomastix was deliberately launched in the final weeks of 1599 to serve as a critique of Jonson's first " comicall satire " Every Man Out, and that ( b ) Jonson's disparagement of Histriomastix in Every Man Out ( III. iv. 29 ) was subsequently added to the acting script of his already completed play, before the end of the same year, as a rejoinder to Marston's initial attack.
