Beaux began attending the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1876, then under the dynamic influence of Thomas Eakins, whose great work The Gross Clinic had " horrified Philadelphia Exhibition-goers as a gory spectacle " at the Centennial Exhibition of 1876.

In 1889 he became the subject of the largest painting ever made by the Philadelphia artist Thomas Eakins, called The Agnew Clinic, in which he is shown conducting a mastectomy operation before a gallery of students and doctors.

Among her fellow students was Thomas Eakins, later the controversial director of the Academy.

In 1886 Thomas Eakins was famously dismissed from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art for removing the loincloth from a male model in a mixed classroom.

During 1884, the painter Thomas Eakins worked as one of his assistants, to learn more about the application of photography to the study of human and animal motion.

Charles Burchfield, whom Hopper admired and whom he was compared to, said of Hopper, “ he achieves such a complete verity that you can read into his interpretations of houses and conceptions of New York life any human implications you wish .” He also attributed Hopper ’ s success to his “ bold individualism … In him we have regained that sturdy American independence which Thomas Eakins gave us, but which for a time was lost .” Hopper considered this a high compliment since he considered Eakins the greatest American painter.

In January 2007 the University sold Thomas Eakins ' painting The Gross Clinic, which depicts a surgery that took place at the school, for $ 68 million, to the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, in association with the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Inspired by the model of Thomas Eakins and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Ozols founded the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts in 1978 to gather together artists and aspiring artists and to teach Classical techniques, stressing working from life.

Thomas Cowperthwait Eakins ( July 25, 1844 – June 25, 1916 ) was an American realist painter, photographer, sculptor, and fine arts educator.

Thomas Eakins observed his father at work and by twelve demonstrated skill in precise line drawing, perspective, and the use of a grid to lay out a careful design, skills he later applied to his art.

Photograph by Thomas Eakins. Eakins has been credited with having " introduced the camera to the American art studio ".

He taught hundreds of students, among them his future wife Susan Macdowell, African-American painter Henry Ossawa Tanner, and Thomas Anshutz, who taught, in turn, Robert Henri, George Luks, John Sloan, and Everett Shinn, future members of the Ashcan School, and other realists and artistic heirs to Eakins ' philosophy.

On November 11, 2006 the Board of Trustees at Thomas Jefferson University agreed to sell The Gross Clinic to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D. C., and the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas for a record $ 68, 000, 000, the highest price for an Eakins painting as well as a record price for an individual American-made portrait.

Thomas Eakins was a man of great character.

A poem by Dylan Thomas, a saxophone solo by Charles Parker, a painting by Jackson Pollock -- these are pure confabulations as ends in themselves.

Monsieur Savary himself gave him a strong grounding in drawing and painting and suggested he draw from nature when he returned to St. Thomas, which he did when he was seventeen.

When he turned twenty-one, Danish artist Fritz Melbye, then living on St. Thomas, inspired Pissarro to take on painting as a full-time profession, becoming his teacher and friend.

However, Thomas Crow argues that this path " proved to be less a way forward than a cul-de-sac for history painting.

Brown's most important painting was Work ( 1852 – 1865 ), commissioned by Thomas Plint and which he showed at a special exhibition.

The painting was commissioned by Thomas Gold Appleton, an American art collector based in Boston, Massachusetts.

In 1823 Audubon took lessons in oil painting technique from John Steen, a teacher of American landscape, and history painter Thomas Cole.

During the Rococo era Portraiture was an important component of painting in all countries, but especially in Great Britain, where the leaders were William Hogarth ( 1697 – 1764 ), in a blunt realist style, and Francis Hayman ( 1708 – 1776 ), Angelica Kauffman who was Swiss, ( 1741 – 1807 ), Thomas Gainsborough and Joshua Reynolds ( 1723 – 1792 ), in more flattering styles influenced by Antony Van Dyck ( 1599 – 1641 ).

At first Turner showed a keen interest in architecture but was advised to continue painting by the architect Thomas Hardwick ( junior ).

In 2007 the auction house brokered a $ 68 million deal that transferred Thomas Eakins's The Gross Clinic ( 1875 ) from the Jefferson Medical College at the Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia to joint ownership by the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

Among his many awards were the Thomas Hunt Morgan Medal ( 1983 ), the Gairdner Foundation International award ( 1987 ), the Wolf Foundation prize in medicine ( 1989 ), the Rosenstiel award ( 1990 ), the National Medal of Science ( 1990 ), the Albert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research ( 1991 ), and the Louisa Gross Horwitz Prize ( 1992 ).

There was little initial reaction to Bachofen ’ s theory of cultural evolution, largely because of his impenetrable literary style, but eventually, as well as furious criticism, the book inspired several generations of ethnologists, social philosophers, and even writers: Lewis Henry Morgan, Friedrich Engels, who drew on Bachofen for Origins of the Family, Private Property, and the State, Thomas Mann, Jane Ellen Harrison, who was inspired by Bachofen to devote her career to mythology, Walter Benjamin, Erich Fromm, Robert Graves, Rainer Maria Rilke, Joseph Campbell, Otto Gross and opponents such as Julius Evola.

In 1943, having broached the possibility of a surgical solution to Dr. Robert Gross of Boston without success, Dr. Taussig approached Blalock and Thomas in their Hopkins laboratory in 1943.
