Toledo has produced a number of famous artists, including actors Jamie Farr, Alyson Stoner, Katie Holmes, Adrianne Palicki and Danny Thomas, musicians Tom Scholz, Lyfe Jennings, and Scott Shriner, painters Israel Abramofsky and James E. Brewton, jazz pianist Art Tatum.

Thomas George Farr ( 12 March 1913 – 1 March 1986 ) was one of the most famous Welsh and British boxers of all time.

It formed out of the Middlebury Commons Club, and had ten principal founders: George Edwin Kimball, Irving Thurston Coates, John Beecher, Thomas Howard Bartley, Pierce Wordsworth Darrow, Benjamin Edward Farr, Gideon Russell Norton, Gino Arturo Ratti, Chester Monroe Walch and Roy Dyer Wood.

The Library is also home to the University of London archives, which include the central archive of the University itself and many other collections, including the papers of philanthropist Charles Booth, philosopher Herbert Spencer, actress and mystic Florence Farr, author and artist Thomas Sturge Moore, writer Opal Whiteley, and publishing company Gerald Duckworth and Company Ltd.

This was originally property of Thomas Farr, but Farr went bankrupt in 1778 following the American Revolutionary War.

Thomas Nagel spelled out this point of view in an influential essay titled What Is it Like to Be a Bat ?.

Thomas Malthus wrote two books, An essay on the principle of population, published in 1798, and Principles of political economy, published in 1820.

Also famous as a prose stylist, Hume pioneered the essay as a literary genre and engaged with contemporary intellectual luminaries such as Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Adam Smith ( who acknowledged Hume's influence on his economics and political philosophy ), James Boswell, Joseph Butler, and Thomas Reid.

He included excerpts from Tom Paine's The Crisis and an essay by Thomas Day calling for the abolition of slavery in accord with the Declaration of Independence.

William Wilberforce received much of the credit although the groundwork was an anti-slavery essay by Thomas Clarkson.

In a 2008 essay published in Harper's Magazine, historian Thomas Frank linked the Times to the modern American conservative movement, saying:
