... contemporary readers are reminded by Machiavelli's teaching of Thucydides ; they find in both authors the same “ realism ,” i. e., the same denial of the power of the gods or of justice and the same sensitivity to harsh necessity and elusive chance.

According to Thucydides, the Spartans acted in this way out of fear that the Athenians would switch sides and support the helots ; the offended Athenians repudiated their alliance with Sparta.

Thucydides was dispatched with a force which arrived too late to stop Brasidas capturing Amphipolis ; Thucydides was exiled for this, and, as a result, had the conversations with both sides of the war which inspired him to record its history.

Thucydides (; Greek: Θουκυδίδης, Thoukydídēs ; c. 460 – c. 395 BC ) was a Greek historian and author from Alimos.

Thucydides ' presentation of events is generally even-handed ; for example, he does not minimize the negative effect of his own failure at Amphipolis.

It is no accident that even today Thucydides turns up as a guiding spirit in military academies, neocon think tanks and the writings of men like Henry Kissinger ; whereas Herodotus has been the choice of imaginative novelists ( Michael Ondaatje's novel The English Patient and the film based on it boosted the sale of the Histories to a wholly unforeseen degree ) and — as food for a starved soul — of an equally imaginative foreign correspondent from Iron Curtain Poland, Ryszard Kapuscinski.

All three chroniclers agree that Themistocles's next move was to contact the Persian king ; in Thucydides, this is by letter, while Plutarch and Diodorus have a face-to-face meeting with the king.

In Rome, the vast, patriotic history of Rome by Livy ( 59 BC-17 AD ) approximated Herodotean inclusiveness ; Polybius ( c. 200-c. 118 BC ) aspired to combine the logical rigor of Thucydides with the scope of Herodotus.

Works of Athenagoras, Aristotle, and Aeschylus appeared in 1557 ; Diodorus Siculus, 1559 ; Xenophon, 1561 ; Sextus Empiricus, 1562 ; Thucydides, 1564 ; Herodotus, both 1566 and 1581 ; and Sophocles, in 1568.

" Old Attic " is a term used for the dialect of Thucydides ( 460-400 BC ) and the dramatists of Athens ' remarkable 5th century ; " New Attic " is used for the language of later writers.

Theramenes also appears in several ancient narrative histories: Thucydides ' account includes the beginnings of Theramenes ' career, and Xenophon, picking up where Thucydides left off, gives a detailed account of several episodes from Theramenes career ; Diodorus Siculus, probably drawing his account from Ephorus at most points, provides another account that varies widely from Xenophon's at several points.

Hellanikos and Thucydides write that he was killed out of jealousy by Atreus and Thyestes, his half-brothers, who cast him into a well.

Nevertheless, Thucydides chose to begin his history where Herodotus left off ( at the Siege of Sestos ), and may therefore have felt that Herodotus's history was accurate enough not to need re-writing or correcting.

Herodotus's recitation at Olympia was a favourite theme among ancient writers and there is another interesting variation on the story to be found in the Suda, Photius and Tzetzes, in which a young Thucydides happened to be in the assembly with his father and burst into tears during the recital, whereupon Herodotus observed prophetically to the boy's father: " Thy son's soul yearns for knowledge.

Such at least was the opinion of Marcellinus in his Life of Thucydides.

Moreover, he included transcriptions of speeches that were delivered by historic figures, although sometimes they were made up by Thucydides himself according to what those people should have said at the moment they delivered them.

One, as early as Thucydides, reported in Plutarch, the Suda and John Tzetzes, states that the Delphic oracle warned Hesiod that he would die in Nemea, and so he fled to Locris, where he was killed at the local temple to Nemean Zeus, and buried there.

Professor of classics at Auckland University, E. M. Blaiklock, wrote: " For accuracy of detail, and for evocation of atmosphere, Luke stands, in fact, with Thucydides.

According to Thucydides, although the Spartans took no action at this time, they " secretly felt aggrieved ".

Eucles, the Athenian commander at Amphipolis, sent to Thucydides for help.

Finally, Herodotus confirms the connection of Thucydides ' family with the mines at Scapté Hýlē.

According to Irving Kristol, self-described founder of American Neoconservatism, Thucydides wrote " the favorite neoconservative text on foreign affairs "; and Thucydides is a required text at the Naval War College, an American institution located in Rhode Island.

On the other hand, Daniel Mendelsohn, in a review of a recent edition of Herodotus, suggests that, at least in his graduate school days during the Cold War, professing admiration of Thucydides served as a form of self-presentation:

To be an admirer of Thucydides ' History, with its deep cynicism about political, rhetorical and ideological hypocrisy, with its all too recognizable protagonists — a liberal yet imperialistic democracy and an authoritarian oligarchy, engaged in a war of attrition fought by proxy at the remote fringes of empire — was to advertise yourself as a hardheaded connoisseur of global Realpolitik.

According to Thucydides, who wrote within living memory of the events, the ship eventually landed safely at Ephesus, where Themistocles disembarked.

Themistocles died at Magnesia in 459 BC, at the age of 65, according to Thucydides, from natural causes.

Thucydides wrote: Suppose the city of Sparta to be deserted, and nothing left but the temples and the ground-plan, distant ages would be very unwilling to believe that the power of the Lacedaemonians was at all equal to their fame.

An attack on Eion is foiled by the arrival of Thucydides at the head of an Athenian squadron.
