In May 1975 the three of them formed The Heartbreakers ; not to be confused with Tom Petty's band, which adopted the same name the following year.

Along the way, Harrison had to stop by Tom Petty's house to pick up his guitar ; Petty and his band had backed Dylan on his last tour.

During their time together, the five members of the Traveling Wilburys frequently collaborated on each others ' solo records ; Lynne and Petty worked on Orbison's final album Mystery Girl ( 1988 ), Harrison played on Dylan's Under the Red Sky ( 1990 ), and Petty and Harrison worked on Lynne's Armchair Theatre ( 1990 ); Lynne produced Petty's solo albums Full Moon Fever ( 1989 ) ( which involved all the Wilburys, save for Dylan ) and Highway Companion ( 2006 ), as well as the Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers album Into the Great Wide Open ( 1991 ).

In 1995, Nicks was reunited with Lindsey Buckingham and contributed the duet " Twisted " to the Twister movie soundtrack, while in 1996 the Sheryl Crow penned " Somebody Stand By Me " featured on the Boys on the Side soundtrack, and Nicks also remade Tom Petty's " Free Fallin '" for Fox's TV hit Party of Five.

In 2006, Nicks performed with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers for the first leg of their tour in the summer, and later in the year returned as a guest performer for a number of songs on the tour celebrating Petty's 30th anniversary since his debut album.

Almost a dozen other musicians were enlisted, including members of Tom Petty's Heartbreakers, guest harmonica from Stevie Wonder, bass guitar from Dean Garcia, string arrangements by Michael Kamen, and Lennox singing duets with Aretha Franklin and Elvis Costello.

The band was composed of the members of The Heartbreakers, Tom Petty's backup band, who took a short break from their work with Petty to record one album, Surf-N-Burn.

As of September 2011, Greatest Hits had sold 7, 464, 000 copies in the United States, making it Tom Petty's best-selling album.

He was the featured bass player for Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty's " Stop Draggin ' My Heart Around " single from Nicks ' 1981 debut solo album Bella Donna, as well as other Petty tracks between 1976 and 1981.
