Many of the counties of Ulster roughly correspond to the territories controlled by the principal clan in that particular area such as the O Donnells of Tír Conaill whose political power was concentrated in what would become the County of Donegal.

The County of Roscommon was separated from Connacht before 1292, and the first session of the Irish parliament in 1297 created the new shires of County Kildare, Meath and Ulster.

County Cavan was also formed in 1584 and transferred from Connacht to Ulster.

ITV television has been available on parts of the east of the Isle of Man on 3rd May 1956 when Granada Television transmissions started from the Winter Hill transmitting station, and to parts of the west of the island on 1st October 1959 from the Black Mountain transmitting station in Northern Ireland which broadcast Ulster Television.

While many functions had passed under the Irish Free State ( Agreement ) Act 1922 to the then Provisional Government of Southern Ireland in April 1922, the pre-existing office of the Ulster King of Arms continued unchanged until 1943.
