She is told to travel through the same window between worlds used by Will and Lyra, and that her role is to " play the serpent " and that all her life's work has led to this.

While doing so, Sir Charles arrives with Mrs. Coulter, and Lyra realizes that Sir Charles is really Lord Boreal, a friend of Mrs. Coulter who came to Will's world long ago and established himself in a position of power.

While deeply asleep, Lyra dreams that she is in a wasteland ( later realized as the land of the dead ) talking to her deceased friend Roger Parslow, whom she promises to help.

Lyra is confronted with her death when she and Will enter the underworld in an attempt to contact the ghost of Lyra's dead friend, Roger.

At Oxford he became a close friend of John Keble and John Henry Newman, with whom he collaborated on the Lyra Apostolica, a collection of religious poems.
