Its maximal extension territory was between the Pyrenees and the taifa of Lleida, that is, the current comarques of Alt Urgell or Urgellet, Noguera, Solsonès, Pla d ' Urgell, Baix Urgell and the still independent country of Andorra.

Alt Urgell (, ) is a comarca ( county ) in Catalonia, Spain, a modern representation of part of the historic County of Urgell ( ca 789-1413 ), seat of the Counts of Urgell and the historic region of Urgellet.

The city is in the local region of Urgellet, a Pyrenean region formed by 16 municipalities of Alt Urgell.

In the north, La Seu d ' Urgell has borders with the municipality of les Valls de Valira, to the west with Montferrer i Castellbò where there is La Seu d ' Urgell Airport ( also known as Andorra-Pirineus airport ), to the south-west with Ribera d ' Urgellet, to the south-east with Alàs i Cerc, and to the north-east with Estamariu.

The original territory was made up of the Alt Urgell, also known as Urgellet from the end of the 12th century onwards, with the see at La Seu d ' Urgell.

The metallic ores of the Pyrenees are not in general of much importance now, though there were iron mines at several locations in Andorra, as well as at Vicdessos in Ariège, and the foot of Canigou in Pyrénées-Orientales long ago.

Catalonia included not only the southern Pyrenees counties of Girona, Pallars, Urgell, Vic and Andorra but also some which were on the northern side of the mountains, such as Perpignan and Foix.

Occasionally other venues were also used: Molodechno City Stadium in May 1996 ( friendly against Azerbaijan ), Vitebsky Central Sport Complex in Vitebsk in November 2005 ( friendly against Latvia ), Central Stadion in Gomel in October 2007 ( Euro 2008 qualifying match against Luxembourg ), Neman Stadium in Grodno June 2009 ( 2010 World Cup qualifier against Andorra ), Borisov City Stadium just a few days later ( friendly against Moldova ) and Regional Sport Complex Brestskiy in Brest in October 2009 ( another 2010 World Cup quallifier against Kazakhstan ).

Until 2004, Andorra had no post codes, but in that year, in cooperation with both countries ' postal administrations, they were finally introduced, with each of the seven parishes of Andorra having its own post code ( or codi postal in Catalan ).

Monaco received 10 points from Andorra ( who were using a jury due to an insufficient number of televotes made in the tiny principality ), 10 points from France and 2 points from newcomers Moldova.

By the twentieth century only the Bishop of Rome ( the Pope, as Sovereign Monarch of Vatican City, formerly of the Papal States, a major power on the Italian peninsula until 1870 ) and the Bishop of Urgell ( as Co-Prince of Andorra ) were still reigning, territorial " princes of the church ".

In the 9th century, Charlemagne's grandson, Charles the Bald, named the Count of Urgell as overlord of Andorra.

On July 12, 1934, an adventurer named Boris Skossyreff issued a proclamation in Urgel, declaring himself Boris I, sovereign prince of Andorra, simultaneously declaring war on the Bishop of Urgell.

As co-princes of Andorra, the President of France and the Bishop of Urgell maintain supreme authority in approval of all international treaties with France and Spain, as well as all those that deal with internal security, defense, Andorran territory, diplomatic representation, and judicial or penal cooperation.

An airfield at La Seu d ' Urgell, 12 km from the Andorra – Spain border and 24 km from Andorra la Vella, is the site of a proposed new airport to serve Andorra and the Pyrenees.

It enters Spain at Puigcerdà and continues west until La Seu d ' Urgell, where it meets the Valira River coming from Andorra.

It may also refer to the shared cuisine of Roussillon and Andorra, which has a similar cuisine to the Alt Urgell and Cerdanya comarques, often referred to as " Catalan mountain cuisine ".

La Seu d ' Urgell is also the capital of the comarca Alt Urgell, head of the judicial district of la Seu d ' Urgell and the seat of Bishop of Urgell, one of the Andorra co-princes.

Alt Urgell is the gateway to the state of Andorra and the proximity to this important population center and economic activity is largely one of the reasons for the current drive of the city of la Seu d ' Urgell within Alt Pirineu i Aran.

The roads to Andorra, Cerdanya and the low Segre all converge on la Seu d ' Urgell.

Henry III of Navarre, who was also count of Foix, in 1589 ascended the French throne as Henry IV, and by an edict of 1607 established the head of the French state, along with the bishop of Urgel, as co-princes of Andorra.

In 1958, Andorra declared peace with Germany, having been forgotten on the Treaty of Versailles that ended World War I and, the conflict being extended by the lack of a peace treaty, remaining legally at war.

Long an impoverished land having little contact with any nations other than adjoining France and Spain, Andorra after World War II achieved considerable prosperity through a developing tourist industry.

Andorra entered into a customs union with the European Communities ( now the EU ) in 1991 and was admitted to the UN on 28 July 1993.

Andorra has reached an agreement with the EU to mint its own coin design, probably from 2013, but subject to ratification by the Andorran Parliament.

One remaining, though symbolic, legacy of Andorra's special relationship with France and Spain, is that the Principality has no postal service of its own – French and Spanish postal services operate side by side, although each of them issues separate stamps for Andorra, instead of using their own.
