Publius Vergilius Maro ( October 15, 70 BC – September 21, 19 BC ), usually called Virgil or Vergil in English, was an ancient Roman poet of the Augustan period.

Polidoro Virgili, commonly latinised as Polydorus Vergilius, or anglicised as Polydore Vergil ( or Virgil ), and often known as Polydore Vergil of Urbino ( c. 1470 – 18 April 1555 ) was an Italian humanist scholar, historian, priest and diplomat who spent most of his life in England.

His best-known works are his novels about Vergil Magus, the magician that medieval legend made out of the Roman poet Virgil ; the Peregrine novels, a comic view of Europe shortly after the fall of Rome ; the Jack Limekiller stories about a Canadian living in an imaginary Central American country modelled after Belize during the 1960s, and the stories of Dr. Eszterhazy, a sort of even more erudite Sherlock Holmesian figure living in the mythical Scythia-Pannonia-Transbalkania, the waning fourth-largest empire in Europe.

The journey of the Trojan survivor Aeneas and his resettling of Trojan refugees in Italy are the subject of the Latin epic poem The Aeneid by Virgil.

A group of small works attributed to the youthful Virgil by the commentators survive collected under the title Appendix Vergiliana, but are largely considered spurious by scholars.

The character Gil Grissom in the CBS television series CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and the character Virgil Tracy in the British television series Thunderbirds are named after the astronaut.
