Channel 4 was the third television station in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex area to sign-on, following Dallas-based KBTV ( now WFAA-TV, channel 8 ) earlier in 1949, and Fort Worth-based WBAP-TV ( now KXAS-TV, channel 5 ) in 1948.
Local television station KXAS channel 5, currently part of the NBC network, was also originally known as WBAP-TV.

It was also notable that, during NBC's network coverage of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, news reports from WBAP-TV's studios were transmitted in color, with NBC broadcasting the coverage in New York from a black and white studio ( WBAP-TV was one of the earliest local stations to convert its local programming to color ).
