Wood Street railway station is in Walthamstow, now part of the London Borough of Waltham Forest in north east London.

Another branch divided off eastwards north of Hackney Downs to Walthamstow in 1870, extended to Chingford in 1873.

The lone structure at that location was designed by Percy Ball to resemble Chingford Church in Walthamstow, England where Walter C. Ball and his wife Amelia grew up together.

Dates for the earliest use of the rivers by boats are unknown, although a late Bronze Age dugout canoe and parts of a Saxon barge have been found in the marshes at Walthamstow.
