Drawing on a childhood spent working his way through the children's section in his local library and a childhood love of magic and fantasy stories such as T. H. White's The Once and Future King, Gaiman created an everyman character of a twelve-year-old boy called Timothy Hunter, who would need to be given an extensive tour of the DC magical universe before being able to decide if he should embrace or reject his destiny as the world's greatest magician.

T. H. White's novel was adapted into the Lerner-Loewe stage musical Camelot ( 1960 ) and the Disney animated film The Sword in the Stone ( 1963 ); Camelot, with its focus on the love of Lancelot and Guinevere and the cuckolding of Arthur, was itself made into a film of the same name in 1967.

One of the best known of the film Merlins is the Merlin of the 1963 animated Disney film The Sword in the Stone, based on T. H. White's novel of the same name.

Nc3 dxe4 ( 3 ... e6 leads to a type of French Defence considered somewhat inferior to main French lines because Black has blocked his c-pawn ) 4. d5 Ne5, when White usually continues in gambit style with 5. Qd4 or 5. Bf4 Ng6 6. Bg3.

White's other main alternative is 8. g4!

Alternatively 7 ... Nc6 can be considered the main line of this variation, when 8. 0-0 Nxd4 9. Kh1 is the notorious Zilbermints Gambit, sacrificing a second pawn in order to increase White's initiative.

White's main alternative to 7. Bd3 is 7. Qd2, aiming to castle queenside and giving additional support to the d4-pawn, while aiming to launch a kingside offensive with Qd2 – f4 and meeting ... h6 with a dangerous Bxh6 sacrifice.

As in many of White's novels, the main focus is on identity ; White views his subject from masculine – feminine, colonial – English, rural – metropolitan, and bourgeois – bohemian polarities.

But the main line is 4 ... Bc5 to attack the f2-pawn, forcing 5. e3, blocking in White's bishop on c1, so that after 5 ... Nc6 White will not have enough pieces to protect his e5-pawn in the long run.

Bb4 by developing the king's knight to e2 rather than f3 and thus preventing Black from disrupting White's queenside pawn structure, as Alekhine did in his game against Pomar above.
