The Oxford English Dictionary dates the English common name " barn swallow " to 1851, though an earlier instance of the collocation in an English-language context is in Gilbert White's popular book The Natural History of Selborne, originally published in 1789:

* W. M. Cooper, a Dothan resident, released a revision of B. F. White's popular tune book The Sacred Harp in 1902.

White's novel The Once and Future King ( where Mordred plays the role of a bitter but successful populist and faux-Bolshevik ) and the musical based on it, Camelot, and Hal Foster's popular comic strip Prince Valiant.

Although intended to only appear once, White's portrayal was very popular for his humorous, geeky antics.

The Sicilian is the most popular and best-scoring response to White's first move 1. e4.

Currently, White's most popular weapon against the Najdorf is 6. Be3.

White's most popular reply is 5. Nc3 when Black's development of the kingside knight often takes focus as playing Nf6 can be met with e5 which both creates a Black weakness on the d6-square and causes the Black knight a disadvantageous move.

The Fianchetto Variation 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nf3 Bg7 4. g3 0-0 5. Bg2 d6 6. 0-0, is named for White's development of his light squared bishop to g2, and is one of the most popular lines at the grandmaster level, with Korchnoi once its most notable practitioner.

4. g3 ( E15 – E19 ) has long been White's most popular line against the Queen's Indian.

A flank opening, it is the fourth most popular and, according to various databases, anywhere from one of the two most successful to the fourth most successful of White's twenty possible first moves.

This time, Stempel failed to recall the name of William Allen White's popular editorials, What's the Matter with Kansas?

e4 scores 53 % overall in the same database but after 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 White's edge is reduced to 51 % against the most popular Sicilian Defense.

Other popular proprietarial revue names included George White's " Scandals " and Earl Carroll's " Vanities.

White's 1. d3 releases his c1 bishop and makes a modest claim for the center, but since it does not stake out as large a share of the centre as 1. d4 does, it is not a popular opening move.

Another Black reply is 2 ... Nc6, possibly hoping White will transpose into the Ruy Lopez with 3. Nf3, but a more popular try is to kick White's bishop with 2 ... c6.

White's other knight move is more popular than Nc3.

Two of Gershwin's most successful works at this time were the scores to the 1920 and 1921 productions of George White's Scandals, a popular annual revue.

A two-time Grammy Award-winner known for his distinctive bass voice and romantic image, White's greatest success came in the 1970s as a solo singer and with the Love Unlimited Orchestra, crafting many enduring soul, funk, and disco songs such as his two biggest hits, " You're the First, the Last, My Everything " and " Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe.

Although White's success on the pop charts slowed down as the disco era came to an end, he maintained a loyal following throughout his career.
