Microsoft announced that they have discontinued the separate release of WinFS for Windows XP and Windows Vista and will gradually incorporate the technologies developed for WinFS in other products and technologies, notably Microsoft SQL Server.

Windows XP lasted longer as Microsoft's flagship operating system than any other version of Windows, from 25 October 2001 to 30 January 2007 when it was succeeded by Windows Vista.

Tridgell was a major developer of the Samba software, analysing the Server Message Block protocol used for workgroup and network file sharing by Microsoft Windows products.

The first Windows NT-based operating system to receive AGP support was Windows NT 4. 0 with service pack 3, introduced in 1997.

Active Directory was previewed in 1999, released first with Windows NT server.

Additional improvements were made in Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2, and with the release of the latter the domain controller role was renamed Active Directory Domain Services.

Worst of all, the highest revenue earner of the combined company was dBASE with no Windows version ready.

Borland had had an internal project to clone dBASE which was intended to run on Windows and was part of the strategy of the acquisition, but by late 1992 this was abandoned due to technical flaws and the company had to constitute a replacement team ( the ObjectVision team, redeployed ) headed by Bill Turpin to redo the job.

WordPerfect itself was struggling with a late and troubled transition to Windows.

The eventual joint company effort, named Borland Office for Windows ( a combination of the WordPerfect word processor, Quattro Pro spreadsheet and Paradox database ) was introduced at the 1993 Comdex computer show.

BeOS was positioned as a multimedia platform which could be used by a substantial population of desktop users and a competitor to Mac OS and Microsoft Windows ( Linux was not relevant as a desktop OS at the time ).

BeOS PE could be started from within Microsoft Windows or Linux, and was intended to nurture consumer interest in its product and give developers something to tinker with.

Software can be quite a profitable industry: Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft was the richest person in the world in 2009 largely by selling the Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office software products.

As that history implies, CCL was written for the Macintosh, but Clozure CL now runs on Mac OS X, FreeBSD, Linux, Solaris and Windows.

The next step was to attempt to bootstrap the compiler on a Windows system, requiring sufficient emulation of Unix to let the GNU configure shell script run.

By 1996, other engineers had joined in, because it was clear that Cygwin would be a useful way to provide Cygnus ' embedded tools hosted on Windows systems ( the previous strategy had been to use DJGPP ).

However, the battle was in vain, as neither platform captured a significant share of the world computer market and only the Apple Macintosh would survive the industry-wide shift to Microsoft Windows running on PC clones.

ClearType was later introduced as an operating system feature in Windows XP, where it was kept turned off by default.

Two other groups contributed to the design of the language and developed implementations: Harlequin released a commercial IDE for Microsoft Windows and Carnegie Mellon University released an open source compiler for Unix systems.

They were released as shareware titles for Macintosh and Windows systems.

A Windows port was released in 2007.

The first independent version of Microsoft Windows, version 1. 0, released on 20 November 1985, achieved little popularity.

Later, two new versions were released: Windows / 286 2. 1 and Windows / 386 2. 1.
