By the end of Judges the Israelites are in a worse condition than they were at the beginning, with Yahweh's treasures used to make idolatrous images, the Levites ( priests ) corrupted, the tribe of Dan conquering a remote village instead of the Canaanite cities, and the tribes of Israel making war on the Benjamites, their own brothers.

For exilic and post-exilic readers, the land was both the sign of Yahweh's faithfulness and Israel's unfaithfulness, as well as the centre of their ethnic identity.

The Deuteronomistic history explains Israel's successes and failures as the result of faithfulness, which brings success, or disobedience, which brings failure ; the destruction of Israel by the Assyrians ( 721 BCE ) and Judah by the Babylonians ( 586 ) are Yahweh's punishment for continued sinfulness.

( God's speech foreshadows major themes of the book: the crossing of the Jordan and conquest of the land, its distribution, and the imperative need for obedience to the Law ; Joshua's own immediate obedience is seen in his speeches to the Israelite commanders and to the Transjordanian tribes, and the Transjordanians ' affirmation of Joshua's leadership echoes Yahweh's assurances of victory ).

Yahweh, as the main character in the book, takes the initiative in conquering the land, and it is Yahweh's power that wins battles ( for example, the walls of Jericho fall because Yahweh is fighting for Israel, not because the Israelites show superior fighting ability ).

The land is Yahweh's to give or withhold, and the fact that he has promised it to Israel gives Israel an inalienable right to take it.

Like the treaties, the Decalogue begins with Yahweh's identification and his doing for Israel (" who brought you out of the land of Egypt ; Ex 20: 2 ) as well as the stipulations commanding absolute loyalty (" You shall not have other gods apart from me ").

Joshua charges the leaders of the Israelites to remain faithful to Yahweh and the covenant, warning of judgement should Israel leave Yahweh and follow other gods ; Joshua meets with all the people and reminds them of Yahweh's great works for them, and of the need to love Yahweh alone.

* Joshua served as the mediator of the renewed covenant between Yahweh and Israel at Shechem ( 8: 30 – 35 ; 24 ), just as Moses was the mediator of Yahweh's covenant with the people at Mount Sinai / Mount Horeb.

Saul is the chosen one, a king appointed by Yahweh, God of Israel, and anointed by Samuel, Yahweh's prophet, and yet he is ultimately rejected.

The book opens with a vision of Yahweh, God of Israel ; moves on to anticipate the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple, explains this as Yahweh's punishment, and closes with the promise of a new beginning and a new Temple.

However, whereas Isaiah sees Jacob / Israel joining " the nations " under Yahweh's rule, Micah looks forward to Israel ruling over the nations.

This helps explain Yahweh's attributes as a storm god ( he comes to rescue Israel surrounded by darkness and thick clouds, and the earth trembles, the clouds drop water, and the mountains quake at his appearance ), and the way he appropriates attributes from the rival storm god Baal.

The 1st-century CE Jewish historian Flavius Josephus, however, understood this to mean that Jephthah burned his daughter on Yahweh's altar, whilst pseudo-Philo, late first century CE, wrote that Jephthah offered his daughter as a burnt offering because he could find no sage in Israel who would cancel his vow.

Christian Identity is also related to other groups such as Aryan Nations, the Aryan Republican Army ( ARA ) and the Patriots Council, Church of Jesus Christ Christian, Thomas Robb, Mission To Israel, Folk And Faith, Jubilee ( newspaper ), Yahweh's Truth ( James Wickstrom ), Church of Israel and Kingdom Identity Ministries.

Jehu assassinated them both in Yahweh's name and had Athaliah's entire extended family in Israel put to death.

Eli is the high priest of Shiloh, the last Israelite judge before the rule of the kings, therefore, the Shiloh tradition will become an old and lost tradition that when the prophet Jeremiah comes on the scene in the history of Yahweh's people, he will seek to renew and to bring back the way of the Shiloh tradition to the people of Israel because the kings have become wicked and defile the temple and tradition of Yahweh.

Now that the Messiah's second presence has arrived, the time has come for the return of the Ancient Worthies the prophets of Old to return as " Princes in all the earth " as visible representatives of Yahweh's Holy Kingdom to Israel and to all people of goodwill.

The first stage was the collection and arrangement of some spoken sayings of the historical Micah ( the material in chapters 1-3 ), in which the prophet attacks those who build estates through oppression and depicts the Assyrian invasion of Judah as Yahweh's punishment on the kingdom's corrupt rulers, including a prophecy that the Temple will be destroyed.

On the eighth day from his birth, Isaac was circumcised, as was necessary for all males of Abraham's household, in order to be in compliance with Yahweh's covenant.

These mourning ceremonies were observed even at the very door of the Temple in Jerusalem in a vision the Israelite prophet Ezekiel was given, which serves as a Biblical prophecy which expresses Yahweh's message at His people's apostate worship of idols:

Samuel is told that Yahweh's threat ( which isn't elaborated further ) will be carried out on Eli and his family, and that there is nothing that can be done to prevent it.

An alliance of Amorite kingdoms headed by the Canaanite king of Jerusalem is defeated with Yahweh's miraculous help, and the enemy kings are hanged on trees.

A powerful multi-national ( or more accurately, multi-ethnic ) coalition headed by the king of Hazor, the most important northern city, is defeated with Yahweh's help and Hazor captured and destroyed.

He echoes Yahweh's own statements with several " I am " declarations that also identify him with symbols of major significance:

Between the eighth to the sixth centuries El became identified with Yahweh, Yahweh-El became the husband of the goddess Asherah, and the other gods and the divine messengers gradually became mere expressions of Yahweh's power.

At Yahweh's command Moses holds his staff out over the water, and throughout the night a strong east wind divides the sea, and the Israelites pass through with a wall of water on either side.

Jael, who sympathized with the Israelites because of his and Jabin's cruelty and hostility toward Yahweh's people, greeted Sisera.

Psalm 89 begins with words of praise for Yahweh's goodness and covenant faithfulness.

Yahweh is cast in the role of the Divine King ruling over all the other deities, as in Psalm 29: 2, where the " sons of God " are called upon to worship Yahweh ; and as Ezekiel 8-10 suggests, the Temple itself became Yahweh's palace, populated by those in his retinue.

The goat-creature finds Herb Asher and attempts to retain control of the world by possessing him and convincing him that Yahweh's creation is an ugly thing that should be shown for what it really is.

Yahweh causes Pharaoh to change his mind about allowing the Israelites to depart ; he pursues them, but God destroys the Egyptian army at the crossing of the Red Sea ( Yam Suf ) and the Israelites celebrate Yahweh's victory.

Evidence increasingly suggests that many Israelites worshipped Asherah as the consort of Yahweh, and various biblical passages indicate that statues of the goddess were kept in Yahweh's temples in Jerusalem, Bethel, and Samaria.

Ahab still consulted Yahweh's prophets and cherished Yahweh's protection when he named his sons Ahaziah (" Yahweh holds ") and Jehoram (" Yahweh is high.

YHWH orders Moses to gather the chiefs of the people and hang up the idolaters before Yahweh to turn away Yahweh's anger.

One of the major themes of the book is Yahweh's sovereignty and the importance of being loyal to Him and His laws above all other gods and sovereigns.
