Yu the Great, the first ruler of the Xia Dynasty, prohibited alcohol throughout the kingdom.

The most prolific writers there were collectively referred to as the Five Great Masters of the Northern School ( 北派五大家 ) -- Huanzhu Louzhu ( 還珠樓主 ), who wrote The Swordspeople from Shu Mountains ( 蜀山剑侠传 )); Bai Yu, who wrote Twelve Coin Darts ( 十二钱镖 ); Wang Dulu, who wrote The Crane-Iron Pentalogy ( 鹤铁五部作 ); Zheng Zhengyin ( 郑证因 ), who wrote The King of Eagle Claws ( 鹰爪王 ); and Zhu Zhenmu ( 朱贞木 ), who wrote The Seven-Killing Stele ( 七杀碑 ).

* 2070 BC ( disputable ): Yu the Great set up the Xia Dynasty, which isn't verified by archeological findings, some propose the Erlitou culture.

Xie is said to have helped Yu the Great to control the Great Flood and for his service to have been granted a place called Shang as a fief.

The dynasty was established by the legendary Yu the Great after Shun, the last of the Five Emperors gave his throne to him.

The Records of the Grand Historian and the Classic of Rites say that Yu the Great is the grandson of Zhuanxu, but there are also other records, like Ban Gu, that say Yu is the fifth generation of Zhuanxu.

Gun, the father of Yu the Great, is the earliest recorded member of the Xia clan.

The Kings of the state of Yue, and therefore its successor state Minyue, also claimed to be descended from Yu the Great.

The historian Sima Qian ( 145 – 90 BC ) dated it much earlier than the 4th century BC, attributing it to the work of Yu the Great ; modern scholars now consider it to belong to the 6th century BC ..

Emperor Shun was the predecessor to the heroic Da Yu ( 大禹 ), or Great Yu, the first emperor of the Xia Dynasty.

Shun passed on his place as emperor to Yu the Great.

The main source for the story of Yu and the Great Flood comes from " The Counsels of Yu the Great " in Classic of History.

As a result of his achievement in resolving the Great Flood, Yu is usually called " Yu the Great " instead of " Emperor Yu ".

Subsequently, one of the earliest texts to mention the use of rockets was the Huolongjing, written by the Chinese artillery officer Jiao Yu in the mid-14th century.

Yu Hua is one of the more notable writers, writing a weird counter-genre short story titled Blood and Plum Blossoms, in which the protagonist goes on a quest to avenge his murdered father.

* Zhou Yu and Liu Bei defeat Cao Cao at the Battle of Red Cliffs ; along with the Battle of Yamen and Battle of Lake Poyang, this is one of the largest naval battles in China's history.

Historian Anne F. Thurston wrote that it " led to loss of culture, and of spiritual values ; loss of hope and ideals ; loss of time, truth and of life ..." Barnouin and Yu summarized the Cultural Revolution as " a political movement that produced unprecedented social divisions, mass mobilization, hysteria, upheavals, arbitrary cruelty, torture, killings, and even civil war ...", calling Mao " one of the most tyrannical despots of the twentieth century.

Regarded as one of the best generals of the Northern and Southern dynasties, Liu Yu started off by reclaiming much of the territory the Chinese had lost during the Sixteen Kingdoms era.

Negotiators representing the government of Japan had also offered to support Yuan's ambitions as one of the rewards for Yuan's support of the Twenty-One Demands .< ref > Barnouin, Barbara and Yu Changgen.

Some of the figures in pit one and two showed fire damage and remains of burnt ceiling rafters have also been found ; these, together with the missing weapons, have been taken as evidence of the reported looting by Xiang Yu and its subsequent burning.

It was exemplified in the work of Han Yu 韓愈 ( 768 – 824 ), a master essayist and strong advocate of a return to Confucian orthodoxy ; Han Yu was later listed as one of the " Eight Great Prose Masters of the Tang and Song.

Yu Chenghui played Yip Man in The Legend of Bruce Lee, a 2008 television series based on the life story of Bruce Lee, who was one of Yip's students.

The importance of filial piety can be expressed in this quote from " The Analects of Confucius ", " Yu Tzu said, ‘ It is rare for a man whose character is such that he is good as a son and obedient as a young man to have the inclination to transgress against his superiors ; it is unheard of for one who has no such inclination to be inclined to start a rebellion.

Guan Yu was one of the most altered and aggrandised characters in the novel, which accounted for his popular image in Chinese society.

# If Guan Yu discovers the whereabouts of Liu Bei ( whose fate was unknown after the battle ) one day, he will leave Cao Cao and reunite with his sworn brother.

However, Cao Cao knew that no one could stop Guan Yu and he gave orders for the officials along the way to give passage to Guan.

In the Western world, Guan Yu is sometimes called the Taoist God of War, probably because he is one of the most well-known military generals worshiped by the Chinese people.

According to Buddhist legends, in 592, Guan Yu manifested himself one night before Ch ' an Master Zhiyi, the founder of the Tiantai school of Buddhism, along with a retinue of spiritual beings.

When Guan Yu surrendered to Cao Cao after Liu Bei was defeated at Xu Province, Xiahou Dun was one of those sceptical of Guan.

On January 21, 1979, the KMT arrested Deng-fa Yu, one of the most prestigious Tangwai leaders, and his son with the intentional false accusation of doing propaganda for the Chinese Communist Party.

Famed for his resourcefulness that even Zhuge Liang was said to be wary of, Zhang He was considered by Chen Shou, author of the Records of the Three Kingdoms, to be one of the five elite generals of Cao Cao, along with Zhang Liao, Xu Huang, Yue Jin and Yu Jin.

Later, Park calls Yu and issues an ultimatum: he has concealed several CTX bombs around Seoul, and will give him just enough time to find each one before setting them off.

He is considered the central figure in the revival of Joseon Buddhism, and most major streams of modern Korean Seon trace their lineages back to him through one of his four main disciples: Yu Jeong ( 1544 – 1610 ); Eongi ( 1581 – 1644 ), Taeneung ( 1562 – 1649 ) and Ilseon ( 1533 – 1608 ), all four of whom were lieutenants to Seosan during the war with Japan.

In the musical production by Takarazuka Revue, Rhett had been played by several top stars of the group, including Yuki Amami ( currently a film / TV actress ), Yu Todoroki ( currently one of the directors of the group ) and Youka Wao ( former leading male role of the Cosmo Troup that retired from the group in July 2006 ).

In one occasion, the enemy commander, Zhou Yu, left the defense of his main camp to his subordinate, Ling Tong, and led most of the troops to rescue another subject, Gan Ning, who was surrounded by Cao Ren's cavalry in a distant castle.

In one particular famous scene, The Swaying Reeds, Zhang Fei ambushes and humiliates Zhou Yu before setting him free.

Lin Yu mentioned also that the ' fierce fire oil ' derived ultimately from China's contact in the ' southern seas ', with Arabia ( Dashiguo ).

* Cao Yu, China's most important playwright of 20th century

Cao Yu (, September 24, 1910 — December 13, 1996 ), born as Wan Jiabao ( T: 萬家寶, S: 万家宝, P: Wàn Jiābǎo ), was a renowned Chinese playwright, often regarded as China's most important of the 20th century.

Even those who have questioned the literary prowess of Cao Yu, for instance, the noted critic C. T. Hsia, admit that the popularization and consolidation of China's theatrical genre is fundamentally owed to the first works of Cao Yu.

Titled National Unification Promotion Law of the People's Republic of China (), it was authored by a Chinese academic Yu Yuanzhou ( 余元洲 ), a professor from the Jianghan University in Wuhan who does not have a formal governmental position, as a suggestion to create formal a legal basis for the People's Republic of China's unification with Taiwan.

He has been called the " Wang Luobin of the 21st century " and has performed modern rock adaptations of several of Wang Luobin's Western China-inspired folk songs, such as " Awariguli " ( a Xinjiang Uyghur folk love song ), " Flowers and Youth " ( pinyin: Hua ' er Yu Shaonian, a Hui Muslim song ), and " At a Faraway Place " ( pinyin: Zai Na Yaoyuan De Difang ", a song from western China's Qinghai ).

Ni Yu Xian, the leader of China's democracy movement, one of the founders of DPC and the China Freedom & Democracy Party, presided over the congress.
