While Zeno told the Senate that Nepos was their lawful sovereign, he did not press the point, and accepted the imperial insignia brought to him by the senate.

Zeno, as member of the protectores domestici, did not take part in the disastrous expedition against the Vandals, led in 468 by Leo's brother-in-law Basiliscus.

After the attack, Zeno did not return to Constantinople, where Aspar and Ardabur were and had still considerable power.

Zeno allowed the arrival in Antioch from nearby monasteries of monks who increased the number of Peter's followers, and did not repress effectively their violence.

Since Leo II was seven years old ( too young to rule himself ) Ariadne and her mother Verina prevailed upon him to crown Zeno, his father, as co-emperor, which he did on 9 February 474.

Zeno succeeded in bribing Armatus too, promising to confirm his rank of magister militum praesentalis for life and promoting his son ( also called Basiliscus ) to the rank of Caesar ; Armatus ' army did not intercept Zeno's troops marching on Constantinople, and the lack of Theodoric Strabo and his army decided the fate of Basiliscus, who fled with his family in the church of Hagia Sophia.

In support of this, Parmenides ' pupil Zeno of Elea attempted to prove that the concept of motion was absurd and as such motion did not exist.

Since Leo II was too young to rule himself, Verina and Ariadne prevailed upon him to crown Zeno as co-emperor, which he did on February 9, 474.

Zeno did so, setting aside the claims of Nepos, who was murdered by his own soldiers in 480.

Aristo did, however, agree with Zeno on the unity of virtue, even if it is often labelled as different things:

Romulus, however, was not recognized by the Eastern Emperor Zeno and so was technically an usurper, Nepos still being the legal Western Emperor.

Zeno, however, insisted that Odoacer had to pay homage to Julius Nepos as the Emperor of the Western Empire.

Eighty-five years later, Zeno would recognize the reality of the Western Empire's reduced domain ( Imperial control had been lost over even the Italian Peninsula ) after the death Western Emperor Julius Nepos and rule as sole emperor.

The subdivisions and co-emperor system were formally abolished by Emperor Zeno in 480 AD following the death of Julius Nepos last Western Emperor and the ascension of Odoacer as the de facto King of Italy in 476 AD.

Zeno pointed out that the Senate should rightfully have first requested that Julius Nepos take the throne once more ; but he nonetheless agreed to their requests.

It is probable that Glycerius left Ravenna for Rome, probably to resist the invader ; the clue is a silver coin minted in Rome, in which Glycerius claims to be Emperor together with other two Emperors ( Leo II and Zeno ), thus not recognising Julius Nepos.

Odoacer, attempting to bypass Nepos, used the Roman Senate to petition the Eastern Emperor, Zeno ; he requested the rank of Patrician for himself, and sought to end the separate line of Western Emperors.

Expecting resistance, Nepos was forced by bad winter weather to delay his voyage until the next year ; it was therefore left to Zeno, as Leo's successor, to support Julius Nepos ' installation in Ravenna.

The division of the empire into Western and Eastern was formally abolished as a separate entity by Emperor Zeno after the death of the last Western Emperor Julius Nepos in 480.

The new administration was not recognized by the rival Eastern Roman Emperors Zeno and Basiliscus, who still considered Julius Nepos to be their legitimate partner in the administration of the Empire.

Julius Nepos, who had been nominated by the Eastern Emperor Zeno, was deposed by the rebelled magister militum Orestes, who installed his own son Romulus in the imperial throne.

Both Zeno and his rival Basiliscus, in the East, continued to regard Julius Nepos, who fled to Dalmatia, as the legitimate Western Emperor, and Romulus as an usurper.

The struggle between Basiliscus and Zeno impeded the Eastern Empire's ability to intervene in the fall of the Western Roman Empire, which happened in early September 476.

When the chieftain of the Heruli, Odoacer, deposed Western Emperor Romulus Augustus, sending the imperial regalia to Constantinople, Zeno had just regained his throne, and he could only appoint Odoacer dux of Italy, thereby ending the Western Roman Empire.

Emperor Zeno, with the support of the Roman Senate officially abolished the separate Western Empire at this time and thereafter the unitary empire was ruled from the eastern capitol of Constantinople.

After the deposition of Western Roman Emperor Romulus Augustulus in 476, Heruli leader Odoacer was appointed dux Italiae ( Duke of Italy ) by the reigning Eastern Roman Emperor Zeno.

Administrative division of the sprawling Empire into a Western and Eastern half with co-emperors for each began under Diocletian in 285 and was periodically abolished and recreated for the next two centuries until final abolishment by the Byzantine emperor Zeno in 480.
