The office of Borough President was created in the consolidation of 1898 to balance centralization with local authority.

Since 1990 the Borough President has acted as an advocate for the borough at the mayoral agencies, the City Council, the New York state government, and corporations.

Brooklyn's current Borough President is Marty Markowitz, elected as a Democrat in 2001 and re-elected in 2005, and 2009.

Impellitteri ran for reelection in 1953, but was defeated by then Manhattan Borough President Robert F. Wagner, Jr., who appointed him a criminal court judge in 1954.

Despite efforts by Borough President Hulan Jack and others to save it, the Savoy and the nearby Cotton Club were demolished for the construction of a housing complex, Bethune Towers / Delano Village.

The Borough Council is currently run by President Thomas J. Murray Sr.

One of the most important pieces of the regeneration jigsaw for the Borough is reviving Accrington town centre.

The town centre is a principal engine of economic revival not only for all communities across the Borough, but also for Pennine Lancashire.
