Formed at the University of Notre Dame in December 1997 by guitarist / vocalist Brendan Bayliss, bassist Ryan Stasik, keyboardist Joel Cummins, and drummer Mike Mirro, Umphrey's McGee combined members of Tashi Station and Stomper Bob, two Notre Dame rock bands.

In 2009, Poland formed OHMphrey, a side-project with Robby Pagliari of OHM, and Jake Cinninger, Kris Myers, and Joel Cummins of progressive rock band Umphrey's McGee.

Umphrey's McGee or UM is an American progressive rock jam band originally from South Bend, Indiana whose music is often referred to as " progressive improvisation ", or " improg " ( as per a progressive sampler released by the band in 2009 ).

He has risen to fame as one of two lead guitarists, in the Chicago-based jam band Umphrey's McGee.

In 1997, he started his own band, Ali Baba's Tahini and regularly played shows alongside of another local band, Umphrey's McGee.

Eventually, Ali Baba's Tahini disbanded in 2000 and Cinninger accepted an offer to join as a full-time member of Umphrey's McGee in 2000.

The band, which formed in 1997, made a name for themselves on the Midwest club circuit and began sharing gigs with an up and coming Umphrey's McGee.

Cinninger brought a heaviness to the Umphrey's sound, as well as a large repertoire of original music, much of which comprised the bulk of the catalog from his previous band, Ali Baba's Tahini.

He also uses an early 80's Marshall JCM 800, endorses Marshall Vintage Modern amps, OldField amps, and also uses Fuchs Audio Technology, and with Umphrey's McGee endorses Moog synthesizers, Morley effects pedals, Source Audio effect pedals and BBE Sound effects.

A few months later, Cinninger disbanded Ali Baba's Tahini to join Umphrey's McGee, where he remains to this day.

Engelmann fronted Asheville-based rock band Mother Vinegar from 2004 – 2007, who, along with Umphrey's McGee, performed a number of Ali Baba's Tahini songs in concert.
