The Congregation for the Oriental Churches has its origins in the " Congregatio de Propaganda Fide pro negotiis ritus orientalis " founded by Pope Pius IX on January 6, 1862.

After a late start, he was ordained priest, and Cosimo I de ' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, sent him as an appropriate ambassador to Pope Pius V, a position which he held for fifteen years.

The Medici produced four Popes of the Catholic Church — Pope Leo X ( 1513 – 1521 ), Pope Clement VII ( 1523 – 1534 ), Pope Pius IV ( 1559 – 1565 ), and Pope Leo XI ( 1605 ); two regent queens of France — Catherine de ' Medici ( 1547 – 1559 ) and Marie de ' Medici ( 1600 – 1610 ); and, in 1531, the family became hereditary Dukes of Florence.

In the Kingdom of Naples difficulties necessitating certain concessions in respect of feudal homage were raised by the liberal minister Tanucci, and more serious disagreements arose with Leopold II ( 1790 – 92 ), later emperor, and Scipione de ' Ricci, bishop of Pistoia and Prato, upon the questions of reform in Tuscany ; but Pius VI did not think fit to condemn the decrees of the synod of Pistoia ( 1786 ) till nearly eight years had elapsed.

A long audience with Pius VI is one of the most extensive scenes in the Marquis de Sade's narrative Juliette, published in 1798.

On being made Grand Duke of Tuscany Cosimo I de ' Medici was granted the use of an open radial crown with a representation of the red Florentine fleurs-de-lis with its stamens posed between the petals in place of the ray in the front, completely covered with precious stones, by Pope Pius V, who specified that the circlet of this crown be engraved with an inscription that the crown had been granted him to wear by the Pope.

He had a close friendship with " Antoninus ", possibly Antoninus Pius, who would consult Rabbi Judah on various worldly and spiritual matters.

Antoninus in many ways was the ideal of the landed gentleman praised not only by ancient Romans, but also by later scholars of classical history, such as Edward Gibbon or the author of the article on Antoninus Pius in the ninth edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica:
